should unused hd100 turn itself off
I've started leaving HD100s (and our single hd200) turned on and connected as a way to encourage family to start using them for all TV watching (hoping to eventually get rid of extra cable boxes.) However, it appears that at least some of my boxes if they go unused for a while (some number of hours) shut themselves off.
IS this normal/appropriate or indicative of some issue? thanks

Sagetv service
If I stop the sagetv service (or reboot the server) my HD100 will shut off.... But I have kept mine on for a long time and never noticed it turning off otherwise.

Are you really sure they are shutting themselfs off? I suspect they just don't respond to anything except the power off command. I suspect the server is breaking the connection which forces you to turn off and then back on the extenders to reconnect. It has been a while since I used my HD100 but I believe you can see the same effect by disconnecting the ethernet cable from the extender for serveral minutes. I would prefer the server to shut off the extender but have not noticed anything like that. Just last night I fell asleep while using my HD200. When I woke up my server had also gone to sleep breaking the connection to the Hd200. I had to power off the HD200 myself.

My sage server stays on 24x7 no sleeping aloud.
I have at least one and maybe 2 extenders where if I turn them on, (indicated by green active light being on) will eventually turn themselves off (again indicated by green active light being off.) Pretty sure this is not due to any network outages as I'd think all extenders would exhibit same behavior if it was. thanks

How long does it usually take? I just powered up my HD100 to see what happens. I currently have both the power (red) and the active (green) lights on. I have covered the IR port so my remote will not power it off. My Hd100 is not currently connected to a TV. I suspect that I will lose the active (green) when my server goes to sleep. Do you lose the power (red) light when the problem occurs?

seems to take some number of hours, but have never figured out exactly how many.
Red light never goes off, only the green and it's not all extenders. Some seem to stay on and connected for effectively ever. Thanks
