Linux Mint 7 and 8 32 bit and 64 bit already doe this on a live CD, which is a one click install, unless you want to dual boot. No drivers to configure, no software to install, it all does it for you right out of the box! It works very well with 1080p and all formats so far. It comes with Mplayer installed and configured by default, just make sure you use an nvidia video card for best results (video Hardware Acceleration).

I do like sageTV for the small form factor and for Mom and Dad (70-80's) who can navigator with a remote control, all you need to do is plug in a usb drive on the back of SageTv or Acer thing and done.

Now linux Myth has many live distro's as well, and so does linux MCE which myth is only a small part of what it can do. Check out linux MCE, it will knock your socks off.

This leads to glitchy, unacceptable playback. In my area, NBC and CBS do this, as well as our Fox affiliate (for non-primetime syndicated shows). So while my ION will play back all sports, all PBS, ABC and Fox (just Fox's primetime) well, it is unacceptable for NBC, CBS and syndicated shows on Fox and other networks.
FWIW, there is a patch floating around to fix MythTV which makes my Ion comparable in playback quality to my HD100. http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/7759
