External BD Drive USB over Cat5e to WHS?

I have an external BD drive, well actually a BD drive in an external enclosure with USB and eSATA. It works fine via USB to my WHS.

Monoprice.com have ($12.75) 'USB 2.0 Extender over CAT5E or CAT6 connection' good for up to 150 feet. This would allow placement of the BD drive next to the TV and connection via Cat5e to the remote (location) WHS.

Big question will BD's stream over this like they do over short, direct, USB?

Thanks.

Dave

sounds very interesting, and I think the only way to tell is to try. $12.75 + shipping doesn't sound like it's going to break the bank if it doesn't work out. Please let us all know.

It should work. But it will all depend on the distance it has to travel and the cable you choose to use. CAT5 is rated at 100Mhz and 100MB, CAT5E is rated at 200MHz and 1.2GB and CAT6 is rated at 250MHz and 2.2GB. CAT5 and CAT5E are 24g wires, but CAT6 is 23g.

FWIW, I've heard that you should connect the adapter to the output of a hub, because a regular USB port may not have enough power to drive the signal over longer distances.
