I mean it's really cool that it works but hardly an elegant solution. It also seems to fail, right when my wife or kids want to use SageTV. So my wife switches over to standard def built in TV tuner. Any news? Does anyone know anyone at Sage so we can get some official responses to this? http://hd.engadget.com/2010/03/13/ce...lable-for-pre/ |

Recently, one of my STB's has failed - rather than a simple hardware and cable swap, it requires restarts of SageTV, Restarts of HP-PVR's, I have to delve back into Tim Moore's stuff (which I have, of course, completely forgotten) and even edit my properties file. The problem is that the better my SageMC works, the less frequent I tweak it, and the more I have to learn everything all over the next time. When first setting it up, it seems to require a few hours each week to get things they way I wanted them. Now, several months later, if I need to do something, it takes me all day (or more than one) to relearn all I've forgotten. I just think that reducing the intricacy of the solution will eliminate the need to relearn so much when there is a problem or when (God forbid) deciding to reload from scratch to change the OS or whatever.

Anyone know how much the certification costs?
I would be willing to pay extra for a version of sage that supported CableCard. That could help recoup the costs.

$80k.
On another note, check out Engadget's review of the Ceton quad tuner: http://hd.engadget.com/2010/03/30/ce...-tuner-review/

Anyone know what a license for PlayReady costs? I'm willing to buy a SageTV add on license for CableCard support. I'm also willing to shell out $400 to stay with SageTV. Otherwise, I'm looking at going to a Moxi DVR in the not too distant future. |

Way Cool
I am just waiting for the first reliable cablecard PC tuner to be released. Ceton (Cetoncorp.com) pushed their development and release date back to May 31, 2010. Silicondust has been pretty quiet about their release date. Hauppauge has been even more quiet to the point of being evasive.
I was hoping for Silicondust (since I really like that model), but I think the four tuner PCI Express card using one CableCard model works better for me. Now I just have to save up another $400 for their offering. I hope that SageTV works with CableCards by then. |

CableCard Concern
From Moxi.com
"Some cable companies use a technology called Switched Digital Video to transmit TV stations. If your cable provider uses Switched Digital Video, you will need to use an SDV adapter. Some cable providers only support two tuners with their SDV adapters. Please contact your cable provider to find out if you live in an SDV area and how many tuners their adapter supports." You might want to look into this before looking at getting a Moxi or any other stand alone CableCard device. If SDV exists and their adapters only support two tuners, then it doesn't make sense to get a model with more than two tuners. I wonder how much Cable companies will charge for a "Multi–stream CableCARD". That phrase worries me. I can just image comments like "It is not our policy to use or provide Multi-stream CableCARDS" or "of course the multi-stream CableCARD has more charges associated with it". |
