Stop teaching me stuff in Studio! You're going to pull me into the dev community if you keep that up. My wife will kill me if I return to coding at all hours of the night!

Seriously, thanks for that. I'll take a look at it when I get back from my business trip (stuck at the airport currently.. delayed 3 hours so far).

First of all, this is a really excellent plugin! Not only is is visually appealing and slick, it fixed my slow load problem with the default SageMC file system browser . Before I moved on from SageTV last time, I was using file system view to break up the massive TV library my nephew gave me because of the slow browsing speed. As I moved on, I was able to consolidate it into 1 again as I didn't have the speed problem with other programs. I was dreading having to reorganize it all again into multiple folders as I came back to SageTV. You saved me from having to do that!

However, I have 1 question. How do you quickly jump around the series list? I have over 700 series, so paging down to "T" is incredibly long. With the default SageMC browser, there is that bar to the right where you can jump by letters. In other programs, they map the number keys on the remote to letter for fast jumping. I tried both with TV Explorer and it doesn't seem to support this. Is there some mechanism for quick jumping?

Thanks!

Edit: I also have a small request. Is it possible to put the series name somewhere to the right of the DVD cover or anywhere? I really like the banners and prefer to use them but some of these baners its hard to tell what series it is. It'd be nice if the text series name showed up somewhere for easy view. Thanks again!

right now unfortunately there is no way to do this. I am definitely going to add some method of quick jumping around the series list (probably 1 = pop out menu, 2-9 = some % down the list... when sorting by alpha this would the letter corresponding to the number, when sorting by the others (date, channel, etc) this would be % down the list). This will be a feature of v2.0 (the next version). If you look back in this thread a couple pages youll see a discussion about this

I hear you... good suggestion. I'll add it as an option in the next version

Hi,

Another happy user with his list of suggestions and problems:
- would be so nice to have 'Do not Like' button in TVE --- I am big fan of intelligent recording and like augmenting it's behaviour with my opinion
- Looks like "sort by Season Episode" does not work or it is just my imagination -- regardless what I do episodes stay sorted by recording date. Especially visible with Simpsons (I have like 70 of them accumulated already :-) )
-are there any keyboa... I mean remote shortcuts I can use to ease navigation?

razrsharpe, interface is really great, btw. Somehow takes me back to nineties, when every game was inventing it's very own interface, everyone was inventing a way to compactly present information in a way that is the best for given case/application. Like Deuteros -- that one was really unusual.

Michael.

it's in the options menu for now (both for groups and episodes)... apparently i neglected to link it back up to the "Dont Like" remote button... i never use IR so therefore i dont have a use for "Don't Like"... I'll make sure the button gets mapped.

I'm pretty sure that's your imagination... Season Episode sorting is the same thing as sorting by Original airing date so that episodes that do not have season/episode data will also be sorted correctly. There are smarts involved so that if 2 episodes air on the same day they are displayed in the correct order (this requires season episode numbers) ... of course this requires that the original air date be present and correct in the metadata (usually is... at least in my experience)
Quote:

not really... just the normal d-pad navigation....
info - cycles through some different info views (truncated description, long description, file info, airing info, actor info).
Select and Play - can be configured to do different things depending on whats in focus... the options are in TVE Options somewhere (forget off the top of my head right now )

It is definitely absent in options and until you told me I did not even realize there is a "don't like" button on remote! I have to try it tomorrow

Well, in this case I'd like to add a request for next version -- to add "true" "season-episode" sorting that will sort according to numerical value of season+episode, ignoring any date (date of recording or date of airing). If season-episode number is missing -- fallback to date-based sorting. Please-please-please!!!!! :-) This would definitely allow me to watch yellow people in historical order. Their airing date has nothing to do with SxE numbering in my case (probably because they are recorded from multiple sources)

Yep. I have seen them, thank you.

I would like to a bug report -- if you go to movies group, press enter, then press right and select smth on selector (that usually show year of recording/season number/etc) -- then there is no way back to group level -- it simply refuses to go. I have to press home button and reenter TVE again. %-)

The "don't like" is missing from the Group options menu, but it does exist on the Episode options menu.

You lost me on this one. I select a Group, press enter (bringing me to Episodes), press right (bringing me to the years). At this point, I can select any year or select "all", but I can still press left twice to get back to the Group level. I can't find the issue you're referencing. Did I miss a step somewhere?

just to be clear... i am not sorting by the date the show was recorded... but by the Original Air Date (which in 99% of the cases is the same as season-episode sort)... I can look into adding a true season-episode sort (by the season/episode number); however, the problem that I will run into is what to do with episodes that do not have a season and/or episode number. In this case I will need to determine where in the list they should go (probably with the original date) and then I will have to "insert" those episodes into the correct place in the table... not impossible but also not a trivial task.

I'm with Skirge... I can navigate to the episode filter and back to the groups no problem... are you using the latest version (1.1.40)?... i seem to remember that might ahve been a bug in an earlier version

EDIT: you are referring to the "Movie" group correct? just reread your original post... I will have to double check that i cant say for sure if i have ever tested that with the "Movie" group.... it does work with the normal groups... and there really isnt anything special about the movie group....

Hmm... I'm not sure I understand why this would be necessary for the OP, unless the metadata is incorrect. Is that what the actual issue is? Perhaps there is no metadata available, so you're looking for an alternative way of getting them in sequence?

I ensured that I verified this before I posted. I noticed that the OP specifically called out the "Movies" group, so I made sure to try it with only that filter enabled. While I didn't check EVERY combination, the other ones I did try were also missing it.

have confirmed this is a bug... not sure if it will get fixed in 1.x but it might

oki what should and shouldnt work:
  • Episode Options menu
    • set and clear dont like
  • Group Options menu
    • I apparently commented out that code not sure why i did that... probably because i don't use "Dont like" and thought it was less useful for groups (since you have it for episodes)
  • "dont like" remote button when focused on an episode
    • set and clear dont like
  • "dont like" remote button when focused on a group
    • set dont like. Can not clear dont like... there is a bug in my code
fixing those dont like bugs are pretty easy if its important enough to people....

My problem with SxE sorting is that it works counter- to what I see on the screen. And on screen I see everything sorted according to a date on the right (and I have no idea where this date is coming from, but in my case it seems to be a recording date). Therefore I have some shows that are not sorted by SxE at all. Would be nice to separate SxE sorting from sorting by date. I see no problems with episodes that do not have enough metadata -- just give them highest weight and sort by name/date between themselves (but I am thinking as C++ developer -- have no idea what is going on in Java, should not be too hard, I guess).

lets look at my code again... ya thats commented out too... i must have had a good reason to comment it out... probably because i couldnt get it to work reliably... so "don't like" doesnt work for groups right now...

the date on the screen for SxE sorting is the Original Air Date... and when you say counter do you mean backwards? because there is an option to reverse sort it (bring up the sorting menu and the check box next to the sorting type is to perform it in reverse...)...

Would be nice to have this, but not overly important -- I could always mark "don't like" each episode personally.

No, counter- means "not what was expected" :-) I.e. I've selected SxE sorting but when I check my recordings they are obviously not sorted that way (I display SxE along episode names).
Btw, I lied about dates -- they are very well in the past, so it is probably airing date as specified in EPG. Problem is that for some shows these dates have nothing todo with sequentiality of SxE numbering

P.S. But otherwise -- awesome plugin! (don't take me wrong :-) )

I've never seen this happen, which is why I asked about your metadata. What's the name of the show? Where is the metadata coming from? Did you record the show or did you import it? Are you sure that the SxE and dates didn't get out of sync somehow? I'd start with the first two episodes (according to some online episode guide) and see what the dates correspond to, as well as ensuring the sequence is correct.

Again, knowing the show and then seeing a screenshot or explanation of what TVE is showing you would go a long way.

@razrsharpe: Just tell me to shut up if I'm interfering with your troubleshooting. I don't want to confuse the issue, like I did with the bug the OP found. (Which I finally had happen to me the next day, BTW...)

Wrong... Found some time to look at it in more detail:
- I use BMT 3.0 for metadata
- there are few cases when sorting by airing date leads to different order wrt SxE (or SxE metadata is wrong)
- e.g. Martha Speaks show, few Simpsons, etc (actually not many)
- I also have few Futurama disks in my video library -- TVExplorer picks them up as shows -- but airing date is same for all of them is 1900 :-); and subsequently order is wrong

Well, I can't say problem is real bad -- but it is still there:
- either BMT or EPG sometimes is wrong
- shows from video library (stored as SxD, i.e. season+disk) do not have airing date and this leads to wrong sorting
