And another noob setup post...

I've been researching this stuff for the last month now and I'm ready to get my feet wet. My requirements are:
  • Schedule & Record SD/HD from Satellite STB
  • Time Shifting (Pause/Rewind Live TV)
  • Rip my DVD collection (and eventually Blu-Ray collection)
  • Movies/Music/Photos storage
  • View/Play media on 2 TVs (1-1080i, 1-CRT eventually replaced with a 1080p set)
From my reading, I know I need the Haupauge HD-PVR to record from the satellite box. Also, I'd like to have Windows Home Server in the mix to back up my PCs in the home and provide the storage space for the movies/music/photos. Now the questions:
  1. Can the Home Server/HD-PVR alone be used to Schedule/Record from the Satellite and provide the Time Shifting and playback or do I need something else in the middle?
  2. If 1) is possible, what specs would I need for my DIY WHS?
  3. Does the SageTV HD Theater (HD-200?) provide for scheduled recording and timeshifting or is merely a device that streams the content from storage?
  4. Would I still be using my Satellite box normally (beside my TV) or would it go in the closet with the WHS?

At this point, it's a blank slate so I'm totally open for suggestions. I wanted to avoid the cost of building a HTPC right now but may do that at a later time. Also, at this time, OTA HD is basically non-existent where I live as is high-speed internet. I can't even get wireless where I live without erecting an 80-foot antenna tower. Will this hinder my experience? ie. do I need internet for scheduled recordings?

Hmmm…. I’m wondering if Sage needs to evaluate their website to address this misconception. I’ve seen several posts wondering this same thing…

The HD200 can schedule and timeshift recordings. The HD200 displays the Sage UI on your TV and gives you full control via your remote. A lot of users on this forum use a headless server and have HD200 front ends. They are wonderful units any UI or themes you see around these threads can be accessed via the HD200. Check this thread for implementations:

Thanks wrems...
OK, so if I have this right:
  1. Build a basic WHS, install SageMC.
  2. Buy a HD-PVR hook it up between by satellite box and my WHS (all in my closet).
  3. Plug my WHS into my network.
  4. Buy a HD Home Theatre, hook it up to the network and put it beside my TV.
  5. All Done.

Thanks pjpjpjpj! If that had been in the stickies, I wouldn't have asked.
Great document... I feel like I know what I'm doing now.

I have 1 question still. Will my abysmal 26.4 kbps dial-up connection hinder my experience with SageTV? Is the guide data stored or downloaded every time it's called up? I could schedule it to connect every night if I needed to...

I don’t think that dialup will interfere with the EPG… Regardless, you can specify your EPG update times:
