I'm doing some research on both SageTV and the HD Theater and I'm having a little problem understanding what the HD Theater can and can not do. All of my movies are in a .mkv container with flac audio. Will the HD Theater pass through audio and let my receiver decode (HD Audio)?

Thanks

No and I'm not aware of any recievers that can decode bitstreamed FLAC (I don't think HDMI even supports it).

In fact, I'm not sure the HD200 will even decode the flac. If you'd kept the TrueHD/DTS-HD MA, the HD200 would pass the core from each though.

The HD200 will decode FLAC, it struggles w/ the multi-channel high bitrate stuff though.

What's it do? Output stereo (unfortunately I don't have the means to try).

I've been meaning to connect it to the AVR to find out, it's connected directly to a TV via analog audio cables.

Looks like stereo is all that comes out (tried both HDMI modes). Interestingly, when PCM audio over HDMI is enabled multi-channel AC3 is only output in stereo as well.

Regarding APorters question - for HD mkv I mux in two audio streams; one FLAC and one AC3. Making FLAC the primary/default track for PC playback (since Sage doesn't switch audio in MKV yet) and AC3 the secondary. When I watch one of these files on the HD200, pressing the "Audio" button swaps the streams and everything works great.

DTS-HD MA

Ok so the 5.1 core is a lossy format and is the only thing the HD200 will pass on to my reciever correct?
Will the HD300 pass on the DTS-HD MA bitstream for the reciever and other lossless formats? or does it also pass on only the core?
Thanks for the help!

The HD300 can bitstream the original DTS-MA, TruHD, or PCM to the receiver over the HDMI connection.
