Invalid Directory - caused by print server

After moving most of my network equipment to a new cabinet, I was unable to get the HD Theater to see my network shares when browsing filesystems. I would get an authentication screen, then get "Invalid Directory".

The problem was with my HP 2605dn printer. Apparently it was advertizing the workgroup WORKGROUP and not allowing other computers to join.

After restarting the printer, I am able to browse all network computers (including the printer).

If I try to open the printer, I get the same screen that I got before: authentication errors and Invalid Directory. This confirms my suspicion that the printer was causing the problem.


So, people getting "Invalid Directory" should look at all computers on the network that advertize to the workgroup - even devices that aren't "computers".
