WHS mapping in SageTV

This has probably been covered many times, but I didn't find a answer when I searched.

My question is this: I have a WHS installed on my home network, and I want to add the "\\WHS\Videos" shared folder to my Recording directory list. How do I do this?

(Most of the other posts recommended that people set up SageTV on the WHS, but I don't think I want to risk that - and the CPU on my HP MediaServer may not be powerful enough anyways.)

I think I already found out how to modify my Sage Properties file to rescan the folders to update the databases when I move my existing recordings over to the WHS Server.

The simple, less secure way is to enable guest access on the WHS box.

The better way is to use a common username/logon/user on your sageserver and your WHS box. I created a user called SageUser on my XP SageServer and set up the Sage Service to logon as that user. I then created a user called SageUser on the WHS Server. Restart both boxes and Sage should have access to the shares. FWIW, I made the username and logon the same to avoid confusion.

Hmmm . Still having problems. Here's what I did:


For my WHS:
1) I set up a new user on my WHS called "SageTV" with a password of "SageTV".
2) I rebooted my WHS.

For WinXP SageTV Server:
1) For Detailed Setup >> Server >> Manage Placeshifter Users >> Add New User, I added a new user called "SageTV" with a password of "SageTV".
2) For Detailed Setup >> Server >> Allow Placeshifter clients to automatically login", I have it set to "Yes". (Hopefully, this is what you meant by "set up the Sage Service to logon as that user")
3) I rebooted my PC.

Then, I tried to connect:
1) Under Detailed Setup >> General >> Video Recording Directories >> Add New Directory, I browsed to Network >> Home >> WHS, but still saw the Invalid Directory message.

What did I miss?

What I meant was to have the Sage Service logon as that user. To manage the service, you use the SageTV Service Control Program. It should be in your SageTV Programs folder.

Run the SageTV Service Control applet. If service mode is not enabled, enable it. If it is already enabled, stop it for now. Click on "change user" and enter the logon name you want to use (SageTV). Restart the service and you should be good to go. Sometimes there is some delay before the systems sync up in regards to users and logons, so you may want to restart the boxes.

I'm getting closer, but not quite there yet.

I now have access to the WHS drive after adding the "SageTV" user account to my Sage Server PC, and following your other recommendations.

However, after I set up the Sage Server to login as the ".\SageTV" user, I now show no videos listed in my "Sage Recordings" directory!

How do you fix this? I want to try moving all my recordings to the WHS and then do the "advanced_video_file_recovery=true" thingy, but I want to make sure I do it right ...

Check your permissions on the "Sage Recordings" directory. Your new "SageTV" account will need to have access to it.

OK, the last step was a subtle problem:

I had the "SageTV" user account on my WinXP SageTV Server set up as an "Administrator" account, so it had full access to all the local hard drives ... but it still didn't work.

The last step of the puzzle appeared to be this: Even though the "SageTV" user account on my WinXP SageTV Server was created, apparently I needed to log on the PC as the "SageTV" user at least once in order for all the hard drive access rights to be truly enabled.
