Sage as a 2k/XP service
Are there any plans to be able to run Sage as a native service? I'd love to be able to have it start on boot without having to log in. It would also be helpful to be able to record with no one logged into the computer.

We currently don't have any plans of doing that. Isn't there some way to do it without us modifying the software?

There are some kludges that allow software to run as a service, but sage has a menu that starts when it opens. I'm not sure how that would work with it loading at startup with no one logged in.
Personally, I think Sage should have two parts....a native service which does all the recording/scheduling/etc, and a client which provides the GUI and display. That would allow recording of shows, and a seamless transition when someone logs out of a workstation and another person logs in. As it is now, when a user logs out, Sage terminates and nothing is recorded until another user logs in. Just my $.02. -Richard |

If you run SageTV.exe -startup then SageTV will startup with no UI. It's used for loading it at startup in Windows. Maybe that'll help you.

There's a utility in the NT4 and 2000 resource kit that'll allow running anything as a service. This in conjuction with the -startup switch should do it. You may need to specify a username/password for the service to run as.
http://www.firedaemon.com/ may do the trick, and it's free for personal use. INSTSRV.EXE and SRVANY.EXE are the utilities in the service pack needed for this.

nope
srvany will not help you. Sure the software runs at a service but you won't be able to see the user interface.

Right, but if you can run it with the -startup switch the program doesn't generate a UI. I assume that you could then run another command to it via girder or somesuch to get the UI to pop up when needed.
I haven't played with all this yet though, I'll give it a shot next weekend and see what I can figure out.

Interesting...I wonder if running with -startup as a service, it would record until you wake it with the -wakeup command.
Sounds like something to play with this weekend. |

1) sagetv -startup still brings up the GUI, even when run from the CLI (cmd.exe)
2) under XP home, I have to run Sage as a service under the system account. I'll be upgrading to XP Pro next weekend when my wife is in Vegas. That should allow me to run it under a specific username if that user is granted log on as a service privs. |

1) I just realized it's dependent upon having the startup option for SageTV being set to load in the taskbar. For the next build I've removed that dependency.

If I recall correctly I read that you guys have the intention of allowing remote connections from other PC's to SageTV running on a PC connected to the TV. Splitting Sage into a "server service" and a client would seem to fit this approach well.
I would love to see Sage running as a service on the "home media server" with a client process on that PC, or other PCs, connecting to it to do UI work with it. Perhaps over time you might even want to have other clients besides the traditional PC. As mentioned above this would also make the recording engine more independent of whether someone is logged on the the PC. Matt |

Well, I just went on to read the network version thread and it sounds like you guys are already well on your way there. Amazing !
I hope that the server process in the network version can easily be configured to run as a service without having to mess with SRVANY. |
