SkyStar HD 2 - WHAT A PAIN!

Hi,

I've been using SageTV for about a year now enjoining the powerful features as our home media player (DVD/Music/Pictures), but never as PVR, I know this is silly as this is what SageTV is mainly for, just I had all my receivers setup already and happy with it, then I moved house and took the change to do this time a proper media distribution system with the TV part of the rig this time. So I did all my research and built a proper "server" with a rock solid Tyan Toledo i3210W as motherboard running XP Pro, then I bought some DVB-S2 SkyStar HD 2 tuner cards which are based on the Twinhan Mantis chipset, installed the BDA drivers, tested the drivers with different applications like DVBviewer and in particular DVBdream which handles the video card almost perfectly.....then was the turn of SageTV, what a pain, Sage sees the BDA drivers, but for some reasons has big trouble to make this drivers working properly. It cannot perform a scan whatsoever. Eventually I managed to make a sort of scan running before DVBdream an tuning to a random channel, then performing the channel scan with Sage I was able to see a sort of channel line up, but no video output.

I have to say that the server PC is supposed to run Sage in server mode with lots of HDD space and tuner cards and to feed a certain number of Extenders and one PC client, so I didn't bother to look for a motherboard with multimedia capabilities, in fact the motherboard has a very basic VGA adapter with 32Mb of memory and just DirectDraw capabilities, no audio hardware.

I hope that Sage running in service mode doesn't need multimedia capabilities or it does? Is this the problem?

Try run Sage in normal mode for testing. You can get permissions errors running as a service with add-ons...

I have tryied what you suggested, but no luck! and yes is FTA only.

I enabled the consolewin and here what is happening when trying to do a scan:

as you can see (marked in red) the signal strength and quality are both zero, means the card is not locked, and I believe is not locked because Sage doesn't initialise the card correctly...as I said before DVBviewer and DVBdream are using the card on the same system without problem.

I'm not a DirectX expert and I did google already for "BDA_MPEG2_TRANSPORT", but couldn't find anything about it, however I discovered in another forum talking about GB-PVR, a fix for the very same card:

The one highlighted in red is very interesting and I wonder if some software component in my setup are missing in order to allow SageTV to work properly, because for DVBviewer and DVBdream the card work perfectly. I wonder if the BDA support for SageTV is mature enough.

...this is a small progress update...well I tried beta 17 and things are much better , I mean it still doesn't work every time, however at least all the error messages in the log are gone and Sage can perform a proper channel scan, but still not able to tune in when selecting a channel; from the log it looks like that sage "thinks" that the channel has been enabled properly and is waiting for the stream coming from the card in vain.

I don't do DVB, but there is a network encoder plugin for DVBViewer that works with sage. Check out this thread over here.

I know about the plugin, but I guess is only useful if your tuner card is not supported by Sage or somehow not BDA compliant. The SkyStar HD 2 comes with BDA drivers out of the box and all other DVB application I've tried so far (DVBdream, Technisat DVBviewer, etc..) can control the card perfectly, also Sage claims that if your card has BDA drivers is should work, so I think is just a matter of time

To be quite honest I rather prefer to maintain the system complexity to the minimum than starting the adventure to populate the server with third party plugins which require constant maintenance and could potentially interfere with the Sage functionalities.

I was merely suggesting it as a stopgap solution to get you up and running until sage gets whatever problems are there worked out.

Come on Sage you're almost there......using the release candidate I can now see some channels LIVE!!!, however it takes one minute or so to tune in showing "No Signal" at first and finally the desired channel. This is a big step forward from b17...

Sorry guys but this card doesn't work with sage, so I gave up and bought a NOVA HD 2 which works perfectly

Also, if in the future the SkyStar HD 2 will be supported and you'll think to buy it, make sure that your mother boards have a spare PCI slot as this card doesn't work in a PCI-X slot (BTW NOVA HD 2 does!!!), apparently is a BDA driver issue and Technisat doesn't admit/refuses to fix it.
