Adjusting video quality and file size

Setup/Detailed Setup/Multimedia/Recording Qualities, I have the following:
Default:great
tuner1:great
tuner2:great
tuner3:great

The menu says Great is DVD@2.0GB/hr. However, my hour long show is over 6gb on disk.

Under Favorites, I have recording quality set to Default. When I click on that, it shows Great dvd @2.0gb/hr.

Also, I know there has to be a way to set global options for recordings (such as start 5 mins early as a default). Where is that?

Encoding quality is for analog capture devices only. It has no effect on digital OTA or QAM tuners, which just write the incoming digital stream directly to disk.

6 GB/hour is about right for broadcast HD.

Check the hidden features for the ability to set defaults for new Manual Recordings and Favorites.
