Delete ONLY recorded shows..

ok, I have a small issue. As I grow my sage collection, i.e. multiple HD100's, I find myself in a situation. The wife and kids are able to delete my movie collection just as easily as they can the recorded shows.

I would really like to know if (whether by hack even) if I can allow them to watch the "imported" stuff but NOT delete it. I only want them to be able to delete their stuff they record from live tv..

thanks

What STV are you using?

In the default STV, you can use Options in the video browser, choose Advanced Options, uncheck Allow Video Deletion. Other users can still change the option, but the delete option & delete command won't be usable unless someone knows to change this.

The 'video deletion' setting workaround won't let the family delete their recorded shows. SageTV doesn't have the feature you want, but should at least have some way of protecting individual videos from easy deletion.

Yes. The option I mentioned only applies to imported videos. There is no setting to disable manual deletion of recordings in the default STV.

This is not true.

That depends on what you mean -- Manual Recording status, Archived status, or the manual delete only Favorite setting will prevent SageTV from automatically deleting a recording. But, you can't turn off manual deletion (i.e.: user initiated) because you have to be able to delete recordings that match the above-mentioned criteria.

Every other media management program I use has a 'protect' flag that allows you to protect individual files from deletion. But not SageTV. I use the Archive flag to 'hide' them from everyone else in the family, but even I have unintentionally deleted a recording I really wanted to keep for lack of this important feaure.

I am marking all my avi files as read only - had the same problem with losing movies and having to re-encode them sucks.

As an alternative approach, you might consider storing the movies and shows you want to protect on an external storage device such as a NAS that allows login based assignment of privileges. My SageTV system logs into my NAS as SageTV and has read-only privileges on directories where I store my MP3s and archived shows. In order to accomplish this, you need to establish a SageTV login and run the SageTV server as a service so that it can use its own credentials. Anything you put in those directories can't be deleted by SageTV no matter what.

I hate to wake an old thread but I am looking at using SageTV for the video streaming at a Charter School for their Video in the Classroom system. Does anyone know of a way to disable deleting recorded videos?

I plan on only giving them the ETV channels and possible the science and history channel depending on rebroadcast licensing.

I could probable make a work around but if there is a way to remove the delete option on the HD200s that would be the easiest solution.

Any ideas?
