5.1 Sound

I currently have my Home Theater set up so I can get 5.1 sound on the Digital Cable Channels such as HBO and all the Movie channels. I have a Scientific Atlantic 4200 set top box with COAX to my receiver. When I watch any of these movie channels I set the receiver input to COAX and if a 5.1 signal is present it works great.

Currently my PC is running SAGETV (registered) using the sound card of the PC and the PC speakers(2.1 Sub/left/right) . I would like to integrate this into my HT system so that the Sound is passed to the receiver and be able to get 5.1. I have an Audigy HD sound card that implies it is capable of 5.1 sound. I am also using a Hauppauge 250 TV capture card. I have tried running a cable from the Digital out jack of the sound card to the two RCA inputs on the receiver but cannot get it to work. I have changed the setting in the sound card software so that it is set up for 5.1 to the receiver but all I get is a very distorted sound. The cable I am using I purchased at Radio Shack and is a single mini plug to two RCA standard plugs. Also one other point; my main reason for wanting to do this is that unless these channels are set to digital mode on the receiver the sound volume is very low so that any recordings made are not very good even if set the sound max volume.

So if their is anyone who has succeeded in accomplishing this I would appreciate any help or advise. Thanks

OK, let me give this a shot...

As for recording digital, there is no way I know of to record the DD output of a STB, sorry

As for hooking your soundcard up to your RX, that shouldn't be too hard. You might want to look at this:
Code:

Sorry, but you'll have to copy/pase the link.

Stranger89 thanks for your help. I did visit the link you gave me and downloaded a couple of articles that may help, I need time to digest them. However in searching this forum I came across this reply from

Gplasky "It is just like on your regular stereo TV. If you connect up your Dolby receiver and if the TV program says "Broadcast in Surround Sound" or "Dolby Stero" you would get the surround sound thru your receiver. This is NOT Digital Dolby. I believe it is Prologic. I have recorded many programs with SageTV and get surround sound on programs broadcast that way."

I guess this more accruately describes what I want to accomplish.

Yeah, perhaps DD wasn't the best way to phrase that, basically there's no way to record digital audio, analog is the only thing that will work, but yes you do still get Dolby Surround (Prologic) throught the 250.
