Possible Java 6.12 problem
I can't be certain, but I suspect that upgrading to Java 6.12 may have broken Sage (6.5.9) for me today.
The service was running, I installed the java update, rebooted and Sage wouldn't start. In fact even the Service Control program repeatedly failed to start (no messages displayed) and attempts to start the service manually (via the services.msc interface) failed "Error 1067". Nothing was written to the sage log file sagetv_0.txt, nor were sage.properties or wiz.bin updated. I then used Vista System Restore to rollback the java update, but still encountered the same problems as above. I tried a Repair install of 6.5.9, same problem, then a full undelete and re-install, still to no avail. I finally restored my whole operating system disk from last night's backup (we all do this don't we?), and all is now ok. I run Vista x64, sagemc and nielms's webserver but didn't re-apply these after the delete/reinstall. I will retry the java upgrade once the waf stabilizes. |

I always stop the Sage service and make sure everything is closed down before upgrading java.

I've had this happpen the last few times I upgraded Java. My solution has been to disable the Sage service, download the offline install of Java and install it, reboot and set up the Sage service again. I just did this a few days ago when I installed update 12. I'm not sure what is causing the problem, but this process always works for me.

Just updated java a BAM my system is down as well. I've never even gotten a virus that did so much damage to my server. Trying to get my sage server up as I type this, but I've been trying to uninstall java for 30 min and it just says preparing to uninstall. BEWARE!

Alright I'm back up! The only way I could uninstall the virus (Java 1.6.12) was to:
1. boot into safe mode 2. change the "C:\program files\java" folder to "C:\program files\javacrap" 3. reboot into normal windows 4. change java folder back to original name 5. uninstall java 1.6.12 6. install java 1.6.11 7. reboot What a mess.

Currently running 6u12 and seems to be pretty stable. When I first loaded it, nearly had a meltdown when I tried to go back to 6u11. I was rolling back to pin down an issue that proved to be from another change at the time. Once I resolved the original problem, I again upgraded to 6u12 and all seems fine. Gerry's advice is key, shut down any applications using JAVA, (i.e.SageService) .... I suspect not doing that was the cause of my near melt!

Yes, stopping the service is essential and I kicked myself for not doing so, I just forgot this time.
Quite why not doing this can so comprehensively trash Sage I don't understand, nor do I see why it is so hard to get rid of the update and/or repair Sage. Anyway, 6u12 is working ok for me now, so don't let my experience put anyone off installing it. Last edited by fac13; 02-15-2009 at 02:53 AM. |

Same problem
As soon as I installed Java 6.12 my SageTV started acting up. I rebooted and then nothing would work. After reading the other threads I was worried about how much work it would be to fix it. I'm running Vista, so I tried the Add/Remove program feature first and it removed it and everything started working again. Whew! Another problem solved thanks to this forum.

Same problem for me w/Vista-32 and Sage 6.5.9.
Managed to use Programs and Features to remove 6.12. Downloaded and installed 6.11. Sage service started fine. Stopped service. Uninstalled 6.11. Downloaded and installed 6.12. Started Sage service just fine. Looking at this thread, Java 6.12 has been having a problem since Feb 14.

Java trashed my system tonite too. Trying to fix something as fucking stupid as the DST problem (which they never should have changed in the first goddamn place) has now caused me a ton of work. Some days I hate that sage is built on Java.

i will admit, I jumped the gun a little. I had to uninstall it using the method above, and managed to get 6u12 installed, but the time is still screwed up. And I'm still not happy about this whole mess anyway.
