Manually removing unwanted channels - .frq files - advice needed.

I'm using a freesat (dvb-s) CARD.
I thought that by editing the .frq file and removing the multitude of unwanted channels that this would be reflected by in sagetv. Yet when I re-enter the channel tuning part of sagetv the old channel line up is still there.

I also had tried using the xmltv importer but it seems to change my frequencies after I match with my xml channel line up and import back to sagetv - so when I go back into sagetv I now get no signal where as before I got a signal. Its also assigning same channel frequency to more than one channel.

I thought that by manually editing the .frq list for the card I'm using that would solve things but I'm obvously need to do something else to get those changes reflected.
Anybody any idea on what that might be?

The .frq file just contains the tuning info from a channel scan. In the Channel Setup menu in SageTV, either clear the remappings on the channels to remove (if the option to reset them is available) or simply select the channel to disable it.

Send a message via MSN to enterpryse
It would be great to have this file editable in Excel and re export it into the .FRQ

I heard you can rename the .frq file to .scn (just change the extension), edit the .scn file, then tell SageTV to do a new scan. It will then do a quick scan by reading the .scn file instead of truly sanning all the frequencies & will update the channel info that way.

I'm not entirely sure if channels removed from the .scn file will be removed in SageTV, so you may still need to reset the mappins. And, if you want a completely new scan to find new channels, you will need to get rid of the .scn file.

I think the following is what you need to do. I'm making a few assumption though so please double check.

Make sure you backup your sage.properties file first though!!!!!!

Delete the source from within Sage, then close sage and the service (if running)

edit the sage.properties files and delete all lines that start...

epg/channel_lineups/

edit your .frq file and only have the channels you want, and set the channel numbers to what you want.

I don't use digiguide but I suspect it works the same as the radio times grabber.

Go into Stephanes importer and delete the lineup, then create a new one and make sure it points to the XML file - this should just have the guide data for the channels that you want to have in Sage.

When you add the channels, edit the channel number to match the channel numbers in the frq file.

When you've finished, save the lineup and then click on the 'update guide data' option. When it finishes close the importer.

Start sage, and add the source again.
When you get to the EPG page, select "Use US/Canada or XMLTV'- then 'cable or satellite' then enter a postcode of 00000.
You then select the lineup you created in Stephanes importer.
It will then ask you if you want to perform a scan. Select 'NO'

I hope this makes sense. I've done this from my memory so if I've missed a step or a screen out I apologise

The problem with this with freesat (UK) the scan returns 650+ channels (mostly duds). I have to then mannual set or rest lots of channels. Ig xmltv importer picks ups all these channels - even those unselected - it copys down the data for all 650. It takes an age.

Doc and opes4 _ I'll try those suggestions. Thanks for the help.
Nearly giving up on Sage TV because of the difficulty in mapping a epg listings.
I also find the the satetv channels settings screen very slow cos it trys to view the screen every time I scroll true the channels the scan has found.

One more go.

thanks.

Its worth sticking with, trust me.

If you don't want to manually edit the frq file you can look at this thread

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35568

where people have posted their already-edited ones.

I have 35 channels in my frq file. Some have a few more and some a few less.

You just have to remember to choose NO when Sage asks you to scan for channels.

Doc.
Thanks for that advice.

It worked well.
One other thing I had to do was during the original frequency compiling scan. I had to ensure the desired channels actually worked. Eg Because I'm using freesat there were several occurances of channel 4 found in the scanned but only some worked. So I went thru them and noted the channel number of one that worked and used those.

thanks again.
