Seagate Hard Drive Warning!!

A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may become inaccessible when the host system is powered on:

Barracuda 7200.11
DiamondMax 22

Most drives are in .5 to 1TB size range. Firmware updates are available for some.

Great, that could cover most of my main storage. Have to check when I get home.

I recently lost it all on my HTPC, I restarted the computer and POOF all gone.

This is what happens, when you reboot the computer the drive won't be found in the BIOS, I had Seagate .5TB size drive. So if you have a drive you think is in question DON'T reboot till you have a good backup, my backups where and a second partition of the drive that failed, I know my BAD.
Live and learn.
I replaced OS drive with a proven Seagate drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262
, and the SageTV recording I went with a
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152102

I won't partition my drives any more, my SageTV folder and backups are now saved on another drive same computer and a seperate computer also.

Here is a link to a discussion on these drives at avsforum.
BEWARE!! Problem with Seagate 7200.11 hard drives!!
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1102039

Side question - If anyone knows of software the will recover files from a drive that can't be found by the bios, please let me know.

Thanks

I have known about reported issues with the Seagate drives. However I have 3 of them (yes all 3 have model numbers that are listed) and have never had any issues. 1 of the drives has been primary recording drive in my Sage server for at least a year and no issues. My other two Seagate drives are in my desktop and I've never had an issue and that computer gets restarted a lot.

The 7200.11 1.5TB drive has a significant number of reported issues more so in Linux. I have the "problem firmware" and still have not experienced the issues that people report (although I use Vista on the machine that has the 7200.11 1.5TB drive).

If you are not experiencing any problems I would wait and let others test the new firmware. As long as I don't have issues I may never update. Updating HDD firmware is very risky. If I decide to update it will be after the firmware has been around for at least a month.

I have two of the 7200.11 1.5TB on Linux so far without any issues (2 months, knock on wood). The key was to upgrade to the recommended firmware (for me SD1A) before i put any data on them.

Yes I did update the firmware. I bought the drives in november on Black Friday sale. They has SD17 firmware. Got the SD1A firmware from this AVS Forums discussions

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1080005

since i didnt want to wait for the support. To update the firmware was supper easy, burn the ISO image, disconnect all drives except the one I am updating, update firmware. I am not using them in RAID config, I am using mirroring between two machines, but I have not noticed any dealys or problems copying and playing from these drives.

Just giving a bump

I'd been having an issue where every now and then, my WHS goes to a DOS looking screen and gives a message that a drive is not found. I have a Seagate 1.5TB (No OS Sage videos only) that's on the bad firmware list. I updated it and am crossing my fingers, I hope that is what was causing my problem.

Thanks for the link to AVS forum, I read all of it and I have downloaded my firmware for my drive, but haven't applied it yet.

If you want to check your drives serial number to Seagates database.
Download the following exe file then run it to get your drives serial number, and model number.
Seagate - Direct link to software to show your drives serial number : http://support.seagate.com/kbimg/utils/drivedetect.exe

then use this link to check if your drive has the problem.

Any one else who did this firmware upgrade with no results? It shows I got the SD1A firmware with the Seagate utility but still cannot see the drive?

SD1A wasn't any good and I don't think it was ever publicly released by Seagate. They released SD1B on their website and it is supposed to fix the problem. I had no problem flashing my SD15 drive to SD1B, but it never became unrecognizable.

I was using it since November. All my BD rips were on it. And for no reason one day it stopped me from booting into Windows. I unplugged it and I could again boot into Windows. Same problem as all others are having.

Thanks, I will search for this firmware. I hope it works as I do not want to RMA this thing.

I just ordered three of these bad boys, using separate orders, to take advantage of the coupons on each one. Hopefully with using 3 separate credit cards, my little scheme works (rubs hands)

I grabbed 3 as well. I read you can use the coupon multiple times with the same account. The first two I ordered I used different payment methods and they both shipped. I ordered the 3rd a day or two later using the same info as before and it is supposed to ship tomorrow.
