Blu-Ray Movie List for Extenders

With more and more people working on getting Blu-Ray movies working in SageTV on the extenders, and the wide variety of steps needed to get each title to work properly, I think it would be a good idea to create a list of titles and basic information for each on how they can be formatted to play.

Please post in regards to the following lists and I will update this on a regular basis.

When posting, please include..

Title?
Original File Size?
End Result File Size?
Did you have to Mux it to get it to work?
Extender Model?
Video Format?
Audio Format?
Converted Audio to?
Basic How to?

To use titles that need no proccessing, simply rip with AnyDVD, and copy the largest .m2ts file to a folder in your Video Import location.

To use titles that need some sort of processing, the basics will be noted here plus a link to the post for further details.

The biggest issue is none are going to "work" in either Sage (software) or Extenders without some sort of modification since neither understand the logical structure of BD.

I'd say it's got much less to do with the title than it does to what the user did to it when they ripped it, eg remux to MKV, remux to M2TS, re-encode, convert audio, etc.

That goes without saying, but people are getting common results with most titles. There are some "slight" differences in outcomes, but overall the people who are working on it are all using a unified approach to getting them to work.

As for the differences in titles, it is making a big difference. Each title differs in the way it is created. Some use different video codecs (i.e. VC-1, AVC), some use multiple .m2ts files, some use many varieties of audio formats, and not to mention different bitrates.

I am simply compiling a "TADA!" list so when people go to fiddle with Blu-Ray, they can stop here and see if the title they are working on has either been a problem or is more than capable of working within Sage (not nativley of course).

Some play just fine by loading up the M2TS file. However, I agree in that I have yet to find a title that can't be remuxed into working.

vexhold - are you saying that these 5 titles won't work even if you downmix the audio to AC3 and remux into an MKV? I don't have any of them, but I can certainly give it a try.

The titles in the dont work list are coming from reading the other thread. If they have gotten these titles working they havent mentioned it to me.

I have personally just started messing with it and havent got Speed Racer to work... yet.

I have your guide printed out and will work more on it tonight.

I rip all movies into mkv with AC3 5.1. I use Eac3to and mkvmerge to do this. So, I'm downconverting the audio in some cases, but trying not to touch the video.

At this point every rip I have plays fine on the 200 (about 20 movies.) Speed Racer and Cloverfield, Pirates movies, new Sean Connery James Bond Blu rays, FF ROTSS and many others.

Many rips didn't play on the 100, but once I recompressed (only a little using megui I believe) they all played fine on the 100. Would prefer not to have to do this.

All playback on my PCs fine if I have the right codecs installed, but I never playback on the PC from within Sage, just do it outside of sage using media player classic.

This is the real problem with gathering a list like this. Folks are using 2 or 3 file formats, they are using multiple conversion methods, they are playing back on many devices and unless all details are provided the info is of limited value, but I agree with the goal of providing more info to all of us, just very hard to get enough coherent info to really help with troubleshooting.

Thanks

It does seem like a good idea, but once you dig into it, it's more a question of "What needs to be done to this disc to get it to work?", as opposed to "Will this disc work?". Multiply that by the two different extenders, the three possible OS choices, the possible PC configurations (hardware and codecs), and the types of problems (skipping, dropped audio, etc.) it's hard to put structure to this.

Since every disc can be manipulated into playing (either through remuxing, audio conversion, video conversion, or some combination), maybe it would be helpful are troubleshooting and known issues lists for each of the following:
  1. HD-100
  2. HD-200
  3. Windows client
  4. Mac client (is anyone doing this?)
  5. Linux client (is anyone doing this?)
That said, it's still a lot to try to organize.

I'm using eac3to to convert DTS/LPCM to AC3. Then I mux to .m2ts. I have problems with Dr. No (Bond) and Independence Day with stuttering on the HD200. I've tried .ts and .mkv containers for both movies w no luck. They play fine on client. FYI, the original m2ts files from the stream folders stutter on my HD200 as well.

I'm now keeping logs of my rips with original video format (vc1,h264,mpg2) and original audio format (dts,ac3) to try to find out just what the issue is. I havn't had any issue with movies with ac3 derivatives yet, just those w DTS.

Don't give up that easy It's not that the thread is a bad idea, quite the contrary. The only issue is that for it to be truly useful, more information is needed. Like at a minimum something like this:

Working:
The Matrix - Remuxed from EVO to MKV with VC-1 and TrueHD converted FLAC and AC3 w/ eac3to (only AC3 works on HD200)

Transformers - Remuxed from EVO to MKV with H.264 and DD+ converted to AC3 w/ eac3to (audio out of sync though)

I'd probably suggest two categories for "working", "Working with no processing" (just playing the m2ts files or maybe evos), and "Working with processing" (some remuxing/re-encoding done/required). Perhaps with a link to the post that describes what was done if in the "Working with processing" category.

I also agree. If there is a particular file and you forgot what settings you used, you can always get that information from several programs. One program which I used in the past is GSpot but don't know if it will give you detailed info or it's being kept up to date.

That was the point I was trying to make, though - "working" depends on the client. So you would need up to 5 different statuses for each movie (OK, maybe 3 if nobody is trying this on Mac/Linux).

Try MediaInfo. GSpot choked on M2TS files for me.

The following worked on the HD-100 with no processing (i.e., I just copied over the M2TS):
10,000 BC
Sleeping Beauty
Home Alone

I'll have to lookup the codecs for the video streams, but the audio streams are all AC3.

The following work on the HD-200:

16 Blocks
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Batman Begins
Batman, The Dark Knight
Blade Runner
Casino Royale
Chicago
Close Encounters
Con Air
Deja Vu
Enemy of the State
Fifth Element
Final Countdown
JFK
Kill Bill 1 & 2
LA Confidential
The Legend Of Zorro
The Lookout
National Treasure 1 & 2
The Patriot
Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2 & 3
Road Warrior
Shawshank Redemption
The Sixth Sense
Stargate
Total Recall
Under Siege

All are AC3 - The m2ts streams played and the muxed (m2ts) files w ac3 6ch audio only worked too - All play on client as well.

I, Robot works on HD-200 w m2ts mux DTS to AC3 6ch - don't have original stream to test right now.

Original m2ts Working:
3:10 To Yuma (VC1)..........(200) muxed to m2ts w AC3, 23GB
50 First Dates (MPG2).......(200) muxed to m2ts w AC3, 14GB
The 6th Day (H264)..........(200) muxed to m2ts w TRUHD>AC3, 22GB
Die Hard 4 (H264)...........(200) muxed to m2ts w AC3, 27GB
Eragon (MPG2)...............(200) muxed to m2ts w DTSHD>AC3, 16GB
Rising Sun (Frn Spa H264)...(200) 23GB

Working ONLY after Muxing:
Chron Of Narnia LWW (H264)..(200) muxed to m2ts w AC3, 30GB
Rising Sun (Eng H264).......(200) muxed to m2ts w DTSHD>AC3, 19GB

Can't Get Working Without Stutter:
Die Hard 1 (H264)...........(200) muxed to m2ts w DTSHD>AC3, 27GB
Die Hard 2 (H264)...........(200) muxed to m2ts w DTSHD>AC3, 27GB

Maybe I'm late to the party, but I learned something I didn't know.
With ADVDHD loaded in the tray, and the BD drive set up as shared by Everyone w Full Access, you can browse the local network from the HD-200, open the BD stream folder and play the m2ts stream from there.

If it plays well you can mux away directly from the disc to the HDD or just copy the m2ts stream file from the disc to the HDD.

If it doesn't play well, there's a chance that it will play once muxed to AC3. In what I've done so far, less than 50% of the problem streams can be muxed to a playable file.

I'm confused - when you say "Original m2ts Working:", that should be without any modification. However, your notes show that you muxed in most cases and converted the audio in others. Can you clarify what you mean by "Original m2ts Working:"? Thanks!

I have a couple more to add to the list (both on the HD-100):
  • A Christmas Story worked fine from the m2ts.
  • Kung Fu Panda audio had to be downmixed to AC3, then muxed back into the m2ts. Then it played fine.

Original m2ts Working = If you open the m2ts file on the BD from the HD-200 the file will play without problems but sometimes with non-English audio track. The HD-200 seems to default to the first audio track it understands (AC3 generally).

You can use the options button on the remote to select the audio track you want but often the desired track doesn't display because it's HD or DTSHD.

I mux everything (to save space) and am just reporting muxed sizes for everyone's information.

An update on some of the movies I was having trouble with earlier:
Dirty Dancing, Die Hard 1, Die Hard 2 work in extender mode when they reside on the Sage server, even though they stutter in standalone mode.

Righteous Kill works in both modes on HD-200.

Eagle Eye (200) won't do standalone but will do extender mode if on Sage server.

I'm trying to gather info to send to Sage so they might determine why those movies that don't work in standalone mode work in extender mode. Here's a link to that thread:
