MX-500 / Silver Remote / Confused
Ok, I bought the USB-UIRT. I have the wonderful MX-500 remote. I want to use the full features of this remote, but what device codes do I use? I mean there is no PVR function pre-built in the MX-500 and the silver happauge remote has too few functions. Do I use some arbitrary VCR as teh set of IR codes the MX-500 will send then map them in Sage? How do "normal" people use a universal remote to full take advantage of all the commands Sage supports?

If you go and press each button on your remote doesn't it send a default signal? That is doesn't the USB-UIRT blink each time? And in Sage, can't you learn each of those to a command?

Droid,
I actually use the MX-500 with the IRMan and here's what I had to do. I first tried to use one of the default VCR remote to get similar functions but it didn't necessarily give me a unique IR code for each key so I had to come up with a workaround. To do so, you need to take another remote that can generate enough unique IR commands to fill all the buttons you want to use with SageTV. Then teach the MX-500 all the codes, which buttons you sign to each codes is irrelevant. Then take those new commands and teach them back to SageTV for control. Let me know if you have any other questions or problems. Dan

I keep debating getting the mx-500 (with or w/o the usb-uirt)... I see there is software at IRClone to control the configuration of the remote from your PC. It doesn't look like you can actually edit the IR codes to create new codes for it to emit, but you can certainly define which keys send which codes. This could be an add-on to the idea of teaching it new codes with a 2nd remote & then go into the PC program to finish configuring it any way you want the keys to work.

I use (and sell) the MX-500, I also have the IRClone software (excellent). If anyone is interested I have a definition file for IRClone that has the Hauppauge Silver remote buttons learned.

I recently got the MX-500 and this is what I am doing. I too use the MX-500 with IRMan and I follow a method very similar to what Dan described above.
I found that the Hauppauge Silver remote generates enough unique codes. So I created a new Sage mode in the MX-500 and taught all the Hauppauge Silver Remote keys to the MX-500 in this mode. Then for all additionals functions, I used another remote to teach those commands to MX-500. I used the URC-6131 remote since I had that handy, but basically any remote that generates unique codes will work. You can even use multiple remotes for different sets of buttons. Once my MX-500 learned different codes for each button, I then linked those buttons to the different commands in Sage. Works like a charm ! I am sooo glad I got the MX-500 Make sure you are using beta 2.0.13 for the command learning in Sage to work correctly. |

Just FYI, I just started using a plugin for girder that allows 1 command when you press a button and another when you hold it down. Its doubled the functionality of the PVR silver remote! Actually, I only use it for 4 or 5 commands but you could double the functions if you wanted.
