IRQ Sharing?
Hey, as described before I got a problem with my GUI out over the PVR-350 on my AMD K6-2 350Mhz System.
I usually have to restart Sage 5 times until it suddenly works, until i reboot the computer again. I now saw that My Network card, my Graphics card and my Hauppauge PVR-350 all share IRQ 7 under Windows 2000, even though there are lots of other free IRQ's. (IRQ 5 for example.) Might this be the problem? And if, how can I tell the other cards to get the f**** of IRQ 7? ;-) Thanks |

That could well be the problem, which slots do you have the cards in?

The Asus V7700 is in the AGP slot. The first PCI slot is covered by the passive graphic card cooler, the second slot has the hauppuage, the third one is empty, and the fourth (and last one) has the network card.
Than there is three more ISA slots which are all empty. |

If the BIOS doesn't allow assigning the IRQ, then you could try simply moving the cards to different slots. That has changed IRQ assignments for me in the past.

Unless you disabled ACPI when you installed Windows, you probably won't have a heck of a lot of control over IRQs.

You could try putting the network card in the slot next to the hauppage (3?)

How can I disable ACPI during installation?

In your BIOS setup.

On the mobos that I've dealt with this on, BIOS lets you disable APIC but not ACPI.
I think that you are supposed to be able to switch from ACPI Uniprocessor PC to Standard PC in the Device manager, but the one time I tried that I screwed up the whole OS. It might be that only the reverse is true. To switch from ACPI to Standard PC during Windows setup, you press F5 when the installation prompts you to press F6 to install a 3rd party SCSI driver. This will bring up a list of hardware layers to choose from. YOu can scroll down to Standard PC (it ususally starts off below the screen's bottom edge). Before you undertake this, it is probably worth doing some experimentation with your BIOS IRQ settings to map out the best IRQ alotment strategy, as well as to do some research on the web about ACPI and APIC. This article is focused on certain motherboards from ABIT but it has a lot of generally applicable information that may be helpful as you navigate the IRQ waters: http://www.sudhian.com/showfaqs.cfm?fid=14&fcid=26 |
