Which Sage software do I need???

Hi Guys,

I'm putting together a 'server' with a 250 and ATI Ehome Wonder in one server only box. My htpc will have Sage Client and one Avermedia M179 (s-vhs input, by-passing the weak tuner) connected via hardwire LAN to the above 'server' box.

I know I need Sage TV and Client, but do I still need Sage 'recorder' to give me a network encoder?

Also, any tips on setup?

Much thanks in advance!

Are you using an encoding device in your HTPC so as to keep your STB near the TV? The nice thing about having all of the encoding devices with the server is that you can reboot/otherwise play with your HTPC without disturbing a recording. Before I split off a server, it was difficult to find a good time to do maintenance on my HTPC. I now have my STB stacked right on top of my server in the study. It did require a 2nd USB-UIRT to do this, though. Just something to consider.

Anyway, since I didn't split up the encoding devices I didn't have to worry about your question, but my understanding is that you would need SageRecorder on the HTPC. Hopefully someone with actual experience can confirm.

salsbst-

Thanks for the reply.

The reason I have to split the server is because I'm out of PCI slots in that machine. I'm not too concerned about maintainence issues on the HTPC since I don't do the upgrade thing all the time with each software release (exception is Sage, however).

Anyone know the software config of the machine Dan and Jeff demo'ed at CES?

In this thread it is stated a few times that you need SageRecorder on the client machine if you want to do encoding there. http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthr...&threadid=2937

And here is the thread where that SageTV box was spec'ed and advertised for sale (though it looks like a Sage server and not a client): http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthr...&threadid=3157
