Travel with the HD200

Now that the HD200 is small and can be used online and offline. I would like tips on when I stay in a hotel room or when trying to book a room on what to ask and make things work.

I need at least s-video but I guess if they don't have at least then I can get s-video to coaxial converter because most hotel have that going to the tv.

Also, when traveling out of the country, would I be able to connect? I know this is dependent of power and type of video signals there tv are able to display.

I don't know if newer hotels which have newer tvs if they have additional connections or did the hotel have them disabled or removed.

I'm on da road now. 1st hotel since I've gotten my HD200. I asked for a room with a tv which I can connect my portable dvd player. The tv had s-video in the back but didn't work. I didn't try out the component in the back. I think only the front rca jacks were enabled (could get to the connections in the back with the remote options).

Now I'm in the hotel room and have 2 usb keys connected watching videos/shows. My hotel room only has wifi available (the lan jacks are not live). I'm thinking of using my laptop to be a gateway to get online video (need to see if this can be done...I think It can) and then maybe try to connect placeshifter to my home network (if I can get that going).

So you're using it in standalone with the USB flashdrives right? Is that working pretty well?

I'm curious of how well it will work in placeshifter mode too so report back. Thanks!

Yes, I was using in standalone mode. I need bigger usb flash keys. I may just buy a 2.5 portable hard drive. Works well.

I used my laptop as a gateway. To do this you have to go to your network connections and right click on your wifi and goto properties and advance tab then check the "allow others to connect..."

I was able to get weather and online videos, however it took forever when looking at HD videos. The SD video I had to wait a while to create a buffer before I started to watch.

I did a speedtest and all I was getting was 250kbs up and down. I guess the hotel cap limited the speed.

Because of this, I didn't even try to set up placeshifter. Maybe when I stay at another hotel I'll try again.

Lessons learned: Always use speedtest to check how good or bad your connection is.

I rarely ever get decent video using PS at a hotel. Watchable, but not decent. They just have too many users on the system for the paltry service they subscribe to. Email and surfing are all they design to accommodate it seems.
