HD Media Extender Audio\Video Playback Exception Error

Still trying to get my HD Theater to work but I am having some issues.

I can no longer get audio or video to playback on the extender from any source. I have tried a ripped DVD (full rip w/ DVDShrink) various audio tracks that worked previously and also YouTube / Google Video.

Anytime I try and play any of these sources the extender pops up with a message "There was a Playback Error in playback. Details: sage.PlaybackException"

You Tube / Google and music files work fine on the PC under the Sage Client but when I try and playback the ripped DVD the same error pops up with some additional verbiage ":ERROR (-4,0x80040217): There was a problem rendering the video portion of the content for playback."

Any help would be appreciated. I really would love to get this thing up and running so I can start archiving my movie collection..

Thanks in advance.

I get the playback exception too on the HD200. It seems to happen after watching YouTube videos. I haven't seen it yet after playing recorded TV or DVDs.

Playback exception solved (for me)

I too had the Playback exception problem. Nothing would play back properly, not even in standalone mode.

Here's how I solved it: there's a RESET for the HD-200. Unplug the unit, then (this is very tricky) hold down the DELETE key on the remote while you plug the unit back in. Keep holding the button down until you see two flashes on the red led. This is documented in the manual.

It takes a while to come back up, but when it does, everything is set back to factory defaults. Now both my HD-200s are working beautifully and I've got no further problems.

One unit is connected to my 62" HD TV via HDMI and it is beautiful! I did notice that when streaming HD video from the internet I need to press Pause for a bit to let the buffer get larger. Then I can play it back with a picture I wouldn't believe possible over the internet.

My other unit is connected to an old 32" JVC CRT via component video...limited to 480i. Some menus are a bit hard to read and internet video filenames are practically a blur, but otherwise everything works great.

I'm now enjoying my Sage TV recorder (using WinTV 1600 with OTA digital fed from an antenna hung in a nearby cedar tree). I can finally kiss Comcast cable goodbye. Gotta keep 'em around for internet access though.

I did have a dog of a time getting these units set up the first time. I'm a software tester by profession and must have a knack for hitting bugs and'or configuring things incorrectly. I wouldn't wish this setup task on the average TV consumer, but once the problems were cleared up, I have to say I'm very impressed. I almost spent $700 on a OTA Tivo HD setup with lifetime subscription. That would have been easier but I've now got much more flexibility. Heck, even my DVD iso files playback fine (as long as I don't try to fast forward or jump chapters).

Cheers!

P.S. I forgot to mention that I also followed the advice of another poster about HD content freezing. I also turned off the Animations in the Sage UI (disabled the entire section).

I too have been flored by the quality of some of the NASA footage in particular.

Metapath,

Thanks you are a lifesaver. I reset the box, did the setup once more and now everything works great. Now I just have to go through the long and painful process of ripping my DVD movies once I get my new storage space.

The NASA videos are freaking amazing BTW.

Any reason the "reset" couldn't be done via the UI of the HD-200? Maybe this is a feature request.

Why? This is usually a last-ditch effort and should almost never have to be done. If a beta firmware isn't working the way you want then you can always stop entering the beta code and return to the last production version of the firmware. You really don't want to make it easy to get to.

A reset feature should be hidden. You don't want someone who is over visiting, who runs into a snag with playback and thinking the reset option is the fix. Making it something that you either would have to know how to do from an admin perspective or completely luck into the right combination is a much better solution to me.
