Zone Alarm and HD PVR
When I first installed my HD PVR I was having big problems with stuttering. Went to 720p with Overlay and all was acceptable.
One of the recommendations was to uninstall Zone Alarm, not just shut it down. I finally got around to that today and now I can run my STB at 1080i. Even with the most current beta I still have to run Overlay but VMR9 is much closer. EVR (I have all the XP updates that should make it work) is not close. Interestingly, VMR9 and EVR shows more stutter (dropped frame) in 720p than 1080i. I'd love to see VMR9 working 100% since it's definitely crisper than Overlay. It's close. Zone Alarm definitely affected my SageTV installation.

I had to migrate to Comodo firewall. ZA was causing all kinds of problems w/ packet delays/loss.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll give Comodo a try. I'm using Windows firewall right now (ugh) but I guess it's better than nothing.

One other thing about comodo that I haven't done much in the way of tweaking is it's "invasive" nature. It pops up confirmation dialogs for stuff like elevated program privileges, apps spawning other apps, and other things that ZA never looked at. There are different levels of scrutiny that you can set though. I think that's one of the reasons I get a NIC crash every 28 days or so. I'm missing a dialog regarding something DynDNS is doing. Took me awhile to guess that, but there's a setting for how long the popups stay on screen. Think I'll extend the delay to several minutes or maybe persist until clicked if I can.
good luck w/ it.

Why use a software firewall at all? If you've got a hardware router between you and the Internet, you're safe from inbound. Are you using your Sage box for anything other than Sage?

One PC is enough on the utility bill. This setup runs about 25% (reported by the UPS) on a 2200VA unit. It was simpler for me to have 1 box, in short.

I should correct myself... I have hardware between me and the net.
