SageTV installation over previous versions

Ok, dumb question that I really should know the answer to, but I don't.

When I go to install SageTV 1.28, do I need to still ininstall the 1.27 beta version, and if I uninstall the 1.27 version before installing 1.28, will all of my settings be carried over, or do I need to back up the sage.properties file and/or other files first?
