Cable and Satellite only choice for PVR

It is very sad that to this day that the mainstream consumer does not understand the value of a setup like SageTV. In fact, when you read articles like this, it seems to me the cable and satellite companies are all working against the true "Personal" Video Recover and the whole Family Media Center that SageTV really is. This is either a business opportunity of the future for SageTV to address or reflects a failure of past marketing which is typical in a high tech company.

As long as sage is satisfactorily profitable to its owners, I vote for staying under the radar. As soon as it goes mainstream, you can kiss lots of things goodbye (comskip, hdpvr, r5000, etc.) because the lawsuits would erupt in the blink of an eye. Look at Replaytv, which got sued because of its built in comskip, and now is pretty much irrelevant. I still have a functioning comskip model as a sage backup and love it, but it's not like you can go to best buy and pick one up.

Might have a more accurate view if you hadn't dug up an article from "Tuesday, 05 April, 2005"...

Was ReplayTV brought down by Comskip or by its sharing functionality?

Now that you mention it, I think it was both, but my point was that they tried to go mainstream with stuff the big co's don't want out there. That didn't ruin them in itself, but it took away their niche, and they gave up ground permanently to the tivo marketing machine. It was then bought by denon, and now part of it is owned by directv, I think.
