Thumbs down BUG: SageTV hangs when changing channels!

When changing channels Sage will almost always, at some point, hang (either show its rotating circle endlessly or just hang). When switching many channels quickly this is more likely to happen, but it may also hang when switching channels as few as 2-3 times, very slowly

Using v6.4 on XP SP3 with Hauppauge 150 and ATI Radeon HD3200.
Tried with different filters and renderers, no luck.
Checking the debug window it SEEMS as if starting/stopping the graph multiple times may be the problem.

Help appreciated!

Tried also with out-of-the-box 6.5.2beta. Clean XP SP3 installation with nothing but drivers for sound, audio, etc.

Just hold down PGUP for channel-up... sooner or later... hangs!

This is definitely a SageTV problem.

I assume you are using regular analog cable capture with your PVR150?

I tried this with my HDHomerun channels (all of my locals in HD) and had no problems whatsoever. Went up and down for about 10 minutes, but unfortunately this is thru my HD100 so it isn't a valid test. Someone else will have to speak up who has your rig.....

This was as close as I could get to duplicating what you are seeing. If it is a bug, then it has to do with Sage and your particular setup. Personally I rarely if ever watch live tv. The only live tv I watch is sports and then it is more of a Set the channel and just watch. I don't "surf" thru Sage. When I did have regular cable, if I wanted to surf I just did that via the regular coax to my tv.

paulbeers: this bug IS sage bug. it occurs even if the actual channel is NOT changed, it is sufficient for sage to do channelup/channeldown (the channel is actually changed via a call to eventghost which transmits an IR code via the blaster -- and as i said even if i shut down eventghost or unplug the blaster, sage will still hang)

looking in debug it seems the only things that happen when changing channels are (1) graph is restarted and (2) a new file to record to is selected. i personally would assume the frequent stopping & restarting the graph is the problem here. or maybe not... not like i can do anything about this either way.

Did you submit a support ticket? Sage support is pretty good about responding to issues. Before you do this, however, I recommend setting Sage to use the Sage MPEG decoder and then recreate the problem. Then submit the log to Sage. If you don't submit it using their decoder, the first thing they'll have you to is to try it with their decoder which makes sense from a problem isolation standpoint.

ghostlobster:
i did submit a ticket, no answer yet.
as you can see from posts #1 and #2, i tried with out-of-the-box 6.5.2beta (i.e. 100% default settings, obviously including their mpeg decoder -- which is NOT the problem since i reproduced the problem under *various* decoders and renderers)

anyhow i'll submit a log as soon as they ask for it.

thanks for trying to help though

I didn't say it wasn't a Sage bug, I stated that it is an issue with your Sage setup, meaning that Sage with your setup doesn't appear to be working, because i can change channels up and down all day long with no issues in my setup.....

Sage is like any other Windows softare, in that there is a million combinations of hardware and that means that there are a million different things that could go wrong. Sounds like you already submitted a support ticket and at this point support will have to take it.

I am having the same problem. Channel up or down in LiveTV causes SageTV to hang and display the "SageTV has encountered a problem and needs to close" Windows dialog. Maybe not immediately, but within a few channel changes. I'm running XP SP3 with HDHomeRun, over the air HD channels. Nvidia 8600 with 176.24 drivers.

I also get the crash sometimes when playing back video and then pressing the Stop button.

I also tried the beta, but it didn't help. I then did a full reinstall (preserving only wiz.bin), but it still happens.

I have been in contact with with SageTV support, but with response times measured in days, I'm going to run out of the 21 day trial pretty soon.

I'm also having the same problem. For me it always happens when watching LiveTV at the end of a program or when I change channels. I either see the rotating circle or it just hangs with a black screen.

I haven't submitted a ticket with SageTV support though...I've been trying to read through the forums to figure out if this is a common problem and if there is a well known solution. I'm getting the sense there isn't one....

Okay, for anyone reading this thread, I may have an answer (at least for me). I sent in an email to SageTV support and they recommended that I do two things:

1) Upgrade my driver for my Hauppauge HD-PVR; and,
2) Load the latest SageTV beta version.

I tried the driver upgrade first, and I still got the circle of death when I hit stop on playback....managed to get it within about 30 seconds of upgrade. However, once I upgraded to 6.5.3 beta it seems to be running fine.

Cross your fingers, but I think I may be close to having a functioning HTPC. Yay!

I tried 6.5.3 also. I changed channels on live TV continuously for about 10 minutes and it never crashed. This may be the real fix for this problem.
