Help with 2 PVR-250s

I'm hoping someone here can help me with this, as I am at the end of my rope. I just got a second PVD-250, both have -16 chips. I am putting them in an Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.0. I have had the system running with 1 tuner in Slot 4 for a few months, but I can't seem to get the second one to work. Most of the time windows cannot start it, with a Code 10 error. Last night at about 2am I got it to work but then my AGP video card couldn't start.

Anyone out there have 2 tuners in this MB? Any help would be appreciated. I am using the SATA, but have the 3COM lan, serial port 2, and gameport disabled.

Thanks in advance

Make sure in your BIOS you allow ESCD to update. I think it is off by default. Also check your screen while it boots and look at the list of devices and make sure they show up there. Don't put the card in PCI slot 1. I have the same board but rev 1.4 and 2 tuners work fine. I think mine are in 2 & 3 or 2 & 4.

yup, i pulled the old one out and tried the new one, works fine.

I can't seem to get both tuners and the video card to initialize, it's really strange. No matter which slot I use for the second tuner I lose all my nvidia stuff and windows falls back to the vga driver.

I took a quick look at the manual and it looks like Slots 1 and 5 share an interupt as well as 3 and the SATA, so 2 and 4 are the most likely places the cards will work. Page 17 if you're interested.

I have the original one in slot 4 and I've been trying all the other slots with the same results. Anyone have any ideas of what I might be looking for to help troubleshoot this?

I'm not sure which os you are running, but I had a lot of trouble getting my 3 cards to play well together until I reinstalled w2k with the "Standard PC" HAL instead of the ACPI HAL. I don't remember the exact instructions but you do something like hit F5 at the very beginning of the install (like when it prompts you to hit F6 to install 3rd party SCSI drivers). Maybe I could have solved this with less drastic measures but it seemed to get rid of some of the "irq magic." I have absolutely no reason to believe that this will help you in any way but it seemed to help me.

Slots 2 and 4 have been the "right ones" for me on two different ASUS boards. On both I have installed slot 2 first, then 4.

I was completely unable to get two 250s installed on Win2k server. Tried it on 2 different motherboards over a period of 2 weeks, both Standard PC and ACPI. It was not an IRQ conflict that was causing the problem -- it was something in the OS. A couple of times, if I disable lots of services, I could get them both installed but I could never figure out which services were doing the trick and never found a way to run the services that I actually needed and also have both 250s.

XP Pro and Server 2k3 both installed easily on 2 different mobos, including one of the mobos that didn't work under 2k server.

Never tried Win2k pro.

What OS are you using?

Just curious, but does it work with one 250 in any slot other than 4?

I haven't tested them all, but it doesn't seem to work in slot 2 alone either.

You can still try the Standard PC HAL with XP. The procedure appears to be the same. See this Microsoft KB Article on how to set the HAL during install or upgrade.
