Starchoice R5000 Mod

Nextcom is now offering a sale for the starchoice mod. Just wondering if any fellow canadians have the starchoice mod? Do you have more then 1 receiver modded? Any known problems using the receivers within Sagetv? Experiences? Thanks for any info.

I had two receivers modded several months ago and have been using them with Sage and could not be happier ! It's an awesome system.

If you search the frums, you will see a few Canadians discussing the R5000. This is a really good post - http://forums.freytechnologies.com/f...ad.php?t=33892

It's a little pricey but you won't regret it !

Thanks for the reply Berg. Just wondering how long it took you to get the receivers back after you shipped them? How long does it take to change channels? Is the R5000 worth the extra money vs the hauppauge HD PVR? Thanks

It took about a week once they received the receivers for them to get back to me. So maybe 10 days in transit both ways, but I guess that depends where you are.

Channel changes can be a little long, but I very rarely watch live TV so it's not an issue, and well worth getting HD.

As for is it worth it ... I don't have an HD-PVR, so I can't compare but I've heard enough problems with them and I have had none with the R5000. Plus, the capture/picture quality can't be matched, so for me it was a resounding yes. Did I spend a couple of hundred bucks more, yes, but so did I on my LCD TV and other components in my home theater, so it's a simple call for me. But it is a personal decision.

Thanks again for the info Berg. I just read someone saying 12-13 seconds for channel changes using the r5000 on verizon fios in the states. Is that generally the speed of channel changes on the starchoice mod?

I was wondering, how hard is it to get these things setup in Sage? I have yet to find any step-by-step instructions, but this seems like a better solution than the HD-PVR from hauppauge.

Haven't done it myself yet, but seems pretty straight forward.
