R5000 (vip211) and recent DISH changes (SELECT needed)

An issue has cropped up on me in the last couple of weeks where every night my VIP211 boxes come up with a screen from the satellite provider with some generic message saying "Hit Select" to return to live TV. This causes the R5000 to capture a blank black screen. I can go with the VIP211 remote, clear the message, and the video will begin playing immediately.

I tried the Nextcomm v3.0c, attempting to use their new PreCode command but it didn't work right for me. In addition the v3.0c seemed to have problems when Sage watching live TV at the switch point where one show ended and another started (all on the same channel). I've reverted back to my prior version.

Has anyone using R5000 units seen anything similar? I am running on WHS but I don't think this has anything to do with it since I've been running rock solid for several months prior to this VIP211 change. I did go in to the VIP menu and disabled the idle screen saver (or whatever it's called... I don't have it in front of me right now).

Thanks - Chad

I kept getting error 801 which Dish told me to clear by;

Press select three times (Ended up being like 6 times, till the receiver dialed support)

Then cancel

Then reset the unit by holding the power button for seven seconds.

Worked for me.

Sounds like your reciever is doing it's nighly update which results in it going into screensaver. You need to disable the automatic updates, you should be able to find instructions on the forum.

In Canada, i have the Bell Expressvu equivlant of that box.... It seems that bell/dish is putting the receiver to "sleep" when it has been inactive for some time. And the resulting message, is "Press 'select'...."

I fixed it by telling sage to send a "SELECT" before each channel change. I use an external tuner plugin. Does your tuner plugin support being able to send a "key" before a channel change?

FWIW, I have a VIP211 and don't have this issue, but I disabled automatic updates.

I know I've deactivated the standby mode on the receivers but don't think I've turned off the EPG nightly update. I'll try that and see what it does although I do use the receiver EPG sometimes to compare against the Sage EPG at times.

Any R5000 users out there trying the PreCode option for the drivers (either v3.0c or the current Beta)?

I am having recent issues with channel change too...

After years of having no issues, suddenly I am.

I have standby deactivated and the epg update turned off.

But neither of these seem to be my issue. It appears when Sage is sending a new channel to the R5000, some time the first number is not "getting through" and as a result, only the last two or 3 digits are entered. Unfortunately, this has often ended up in some pay-per-view or similar situation and any subsequent recordings are locked up.

Is there a way to program in a "SELECT" or some other first command? I can't figure out how to do this from within SageTV or in the properties file.

Thanks.

Update the R5000 software and use the new "precode" function built into it. You should do it anyway so you don't end up stuck on an unsubscribed channel...

R5000-HD DVR ver. 3.0c Release: This update adds the following features and fixes:

* Major release - Windows Media Center now supported with new special version
* Support for BEV 9242 MPEG-4 DVR
* Dedicated setting for DCP501 cable tuner (differing "power" command from 2000 series)
* Ensures cable streams are fully parsed out for active programs
* Rev. "c" - Changes/additions to logging: all entries are time-stamped, more detailed logging added for SageTV related events. DVR no longer halts on file open/write errors (logs them).

Special Options
* Can enable Sage event logging to troubleshoot problems using the DVR with SageTV
Add the following token to the DVR configuration file, after the last entry but before "end":

Other: SageDebugFile

This will create a log of Sage-related events in the file "SageLog.txt" in the R5000-HD install directory

* User definable channel digit delay. To define a larger or smaller delay between channel digits (the default is 500mS) add the following entry to the configuration file:

Other: DigitDelay=250

This example changes the delay to 250mS, substitute the desired delay in mS (1000 = 1 sec). If already enabling the Sage event log, place the value on the same line separated by a space:

Other: SageDebugFile DigitDelay=250

* Programmable IR "pre-code" option - Adding the token "PreCode:" to the configuration file allows a programmable sequence of codes to be sent to the STB before a PVR channel change is initiated. This is helpful for receivers that may need additional commands to "wake up", etc. The format is:

PreCode: <IRcode0> <delay> <IRcode1> <delay>, etc.

where "IRcode" is any of the IR code tokens defined in the command line guide. The delay value is set in mS (1000 = 1 second). Use spaces to separate all tokens.

Thanks so much for your reply. I must be missing something. I have version 3.0c, but I can not find - at least in the menu structure - the options your are describing. Should this be part of the "SageTV" menu?

Thanks,
Ralph

Sage DVR version 3.0e

It is recommended that Sage users install the 3.0e beta version of the DVR (click on the "beta versions" of the Downloads page.)

This version reduces channel change time by remaining in the "streaming" mode while SageTV is connected. Overall speed and reliability has been improved over previous versions.

The options/tweaks listed for 3.0c are manually configured by editing the R5000-HD configuration file(s). The configuration is stored in the file: <serial#>.cfg found in the "c:\program files\r5000hd" directory. It is plain text, user-editable. Make sure to follow all conventions such as spaces, colons and capitalizations.
