What would you do ... configuration question ...

Hey all,

We just obtained a standard definition television that we will be using in our kid's room. They mostly watch stuff that is recorded using the Sage server. Currently we have a standard definition television in the living room with a MediaMVP extender.

My dilemma is that I need to purchase another extender. My first thought was to put the MediaMVP in the kids bedroom and purchase a high def extender for the living room. However, with high-def nowhere in our immediate future I went back to look at MediaMVPs. I notice they are no longer sold on the Sage Store site. Are they no longer made, or just no longer sold by Sage?

My other dilemma is that the high-def extenders are not available yet. I need to get this done ASAP. Anyone got any advice?

Thanks in advance,
Rob Hix

You can buy a MediaMVP from anywhere (check ebay). Then all you need to do is buy a placeshifter/extender license for the second unit. Most will tell you to go the route of the HD100 since it will play many other video types other than MPEG2 natively and will future proof you when and if you should go HD. However based on your comment about needing to get this done ASAP, I would go the MediaMVP route as you can have one in your hands within a week and no one seems to know when the next shipment of HD100's will be in. It will also be cheaper.

I still see MVPs for sale in various computer stores, and you can get them on eBay for pretty good prices too (in either case you'd need to buy an Extender license from Sage).

I generally tell people to get the HD100 at this point. The MVP is very limited- it only handles standard definition MPEG2. But, if you know you won't be moving to HD, and you have no interest in playing back divx/mpeg4/H.264 videos on your TV, then there really isn't much of a reason not to just go with an MVP.

Unfortunately, the HD100s aren't in stock now, and Sage has been telling people it's going to be another month or two before they get them in (but, they've been saying "a month or two" for over a month now, so that tells me they don't really know). There isn't a very good alternative to the HD100 at this point. Right now you'd pretty much have to choose between waiting an indefinite amount of time, buying an MVP off eBay (or an online store), or putting together a PC client.
