HD-PVR Rev. D1

Anyone receive one of these yet? What's different?

I don't have one, but I've seen reports on AVS Forum that it has some slotted air vents, the fan might be quieter, and it might run a little cooler. Hopefully that's true. It sounds like the HD-PVRs are much less reliable than the SD capture cards. I've been waiting for Hauppauge to work out the bugs before I get one.

What bugs? There was the initial overheating problem, which they fixed immediately. I know some people still get problems even after the fix, but with any products, there's gonna be a percentage of defects. I have the rev. C2 model I think, and its been running non stop for months now, there's no problem at all.

What bugs? What planet have you been on?

1. The overheating problem as you mentioned. But no, the fix was not immediate. Placing a noisy fan with no venting was just a bandaid until the rev D models finally came out.

2. 720p playback on HD Extenders. Sage has said that there is a known problem with the 720p capture files the HD PVR creates that causes periodic studdering. Still waiting for a firmware fix from Hauppauge to correct this.

3. No 5.1 audio support. While this isn't a "bug", it's still not available yet.

Those are just the problems that I have personally seen. There are other issues that members of AVS forums have documented.

I'm glad that the above issues haven't affected you, but they have hit many, many others. The poster is wise to wait awhile. I have high hopes that Hauppauge will eventually deliver a solid product.

Everyone knows that 2 and 3 are a driver issue and not a hardware issue. This is a thread about HARDWARE issues. 2 and 3 are being corrected with updated drivers (who knows when).

As for 1, my fan is Quiet. I can't hear it next to my server. I do wish it had slots and I have considered adding slots as a precaution, but otherwise it works fine for me. There are some who still had problems with the C2 versions and hopefully D1 menas that all will be rock solid / stable going forward but for the most part C2 is there to.

Um...let's lighten up here, this is a thread about a PIECE of hardware called a HD-PVR. It could have issues caused by hardware, software or an overabundance of solar activity.

As reggie14 posted, he is waiting to purchase one when it he feels that Hauppauge has worked out the major issues. I hope (for him and others) that a combination of the D level revision with it's fan and air slots, and updated drivers will be all that it takes.

As a side note, not "everyone" agrees that issue 3 is completely a driver issue. Others more knowledgable that I have noted that the Ambarella chip in the HD-PVR cannot encode 5.1 audio. So it's more a software issue caused by a hardware limitation. They have speculated that this may be one of the reasons why it's taking so long for an updated driver to come out.

Now I'm going back to watching the Eagles / Bears game on my Sage,TV HD-PVR, HD Extender system.

Go Eagles!!!

It doesn't need to encode the audio, just do a straight capture. Its EASIER to just take the raw AC3 stream than encode it into AAC, which is why it makes no sense to have AAC audio before AC3.

Also, go Bears, my Cowboys need the bEagles to lose.

Yea, I'm sure Reggie writes his own drivers, so when he says he is waiting for Hauppauge to work out the bugs, he means HARDWARE only

I'd add the audio sync issue with the HD100 as well. Sage says that's a driver bug.
