Wireless MVP performance on G network
Hey guys, I'm thinking hard about getting a wireless MVP. My concern is it's performance on my wireless G network. Can you guys tell me how well it performs over wireless? I'll be watching mostly SD but I did recently add an HD tuner so HD recordings would be nice as well.
Can anyone give me any advice/warnings? A wire drop is out of the question unfortunately. |

I don't recommend it. I never got my wireless MVP to work consistently. It worked great when I hooked it up to a WRT54G that I used as a wireless bridge, but the wireless functionality on the actual wMVP was always lacking. If you can still get them, I'd recommend just getting regular MVP and a wireless bridge. Or, better yet, get a HD100 and wireless N bridge.

I'm going to be somewhat unhelpful here and give you the exact opposite response. I think it's a total crapshoot, since no two sage setups are identical. My wMVP that I bought used on ebay has never skipped a beat either on sd or transcoded HD. Server specs are in my sig, nothing very special. Only thing I can attribute my success to is that the wMVP is one thin wall away from my wireless router, which is a linksys with built in vonage.
I would suggest watching for a good deal on ebay, because you can probably re-sell (re-bay?) and get most if not all of your money back if it doesn't work.

Thanks for the insight. Yeah, sounds like a coin flip. I'm planning on moving my wireless router closer to the room I want to use the MVP in. I've already got an xbox running XBMC with somewhat shoddy results so I guess I'll see if moving the router helps it's performance. I can only guess that I probably would have trouble with the wireless MVP.

I'll expand on my previous comment. My wMVP worked pretty well before I switched my recording quality to 3GB/hour from 2GB/hour. I had minor and infrequent stuttering at 2GB/hour. Moving up to 3GB/hour caused a lot more stuttering, and fast forwarding became a very unpleasant experience. It wasn't a signal issue though. The wMVP was in the same room at my WRT54G router, and there were no other visible wireless networks (and no 2.4GHz cordless phones).

I never had any success no matter how close the MVP was to the router. It stuttered and frequently lost the connection. The cordless phone totally messed things up as well.
