HD PVR Sage Video quality settings...I notice a difference!

By default it's 3.8 GB/hr; I changed it to max 5.9 and recorded the same episode of Man vs. Wild.

I definitely can see a difference - image seems much sharper and clearer.

Weird thing is the channel change isn't as fast at 5.9 as it was at 3.8. Using the supplied Hauppage IR blaster, at 5.9 when I do a "channel up" you can hear the audio repeat the last 2-3 seconds before the switch. Not so @ 3.8. Anyone else notice this?

I don't have a HDPVR yet, but am confused about how the quality settings work. Are you saying that the Sage quality settings are used by the HDPVR?

I thought somewhere I saw people setting bitrates (like 8-12 or something) and constant versus variable settings. Are those also in Sage or the HDPVR drivers/software?

Does one override the other or ???

I am confused....

Yes you can set the quality setting within Sage. Unlike HD MPEG2 streams where sage just captures the digital stream, the HDPVR takes the analog output and converts it to a digital stream (much like all of our basic Hardware SD MPEG2 cards).

The "8-12 or something" you mentioned are in mb/s. Sage uses GB/h so the 5.9GB that Sage states is equivalent to 13.5 mb/s (the maximum recording rate the HD-PVR can do).
