SageTV and Hauppage Tuners under win2k3 server?
Hi All,
This must surely have been discussed before...can anybody point me in the right direction? I am considering making my home server run win2k2. I know it's overkill but it's maily to also get myself familiar with system admin type work. I need to know if SageTV woudl have any issues and if there are any issues with Hauppage and some of ther other main tuner suppliers to run under win2k3. The intent is to mainly use externeder to remote clients (i.e. laptop), this server is not intended to have a HTPC function. |

My HD PVR and PVR250 work just fine in 2k3 with the XP (IIRC) drivers.

if your server has 4 gig or more ram in it. The Hauppage drivers for my PVR-500 wont work with 4 gigs of ram. Which is a shame, perhaps their other devices may have the same issues to.
Once I brought the ram below 4 gigs I could record again. It's posted over in their forum about running more than 4 gigs of ram.

4GB should generally be enough to run win2k server, SageTV as service and some automation software wouldnt it?

not unless you use it for other things like VMWARE/ SBS etc..

2gb of RAM is what I run in my w2k3 SERVER.
More than 3 gb of ram will not be seen by a 32bit OS if memory serves me correctly. If you go to a 64bit version of W2K3 then I think you will have issues with using the Hauppauge 32 bit drivers. Someone chime in if this is incorrect.

windows 2003 sp2 will see 4 gigs of ram using PAE mode.
But the 32 bit drivers will cause no video signal to be recorded when 4gig is installed. Due to memory related issues in the drivers use from Hauppauge , at least for my MCE 500 card anyways.

I can totally confirm the >4GB or >3GB or ram issue.
My new machine with Win2k3 server had 4GB of ram ( 2 stick of 2GB), I was getting the 'No signal' issue. After removing 1 of the stick's it's all good. Anyway around the limitation though? I'd like to have my 4GB of ramm in there. Also if i would have remembered this thread i would probably have ordered 2 sticks of 1 GB so that i can take advantage of the dual channel speed which you cannot do with 1 2GB stick. At least it's working now and 4GB or ram was probably overkill anyway. Any word on workarounds would be much appreciated. Last edited by MavRic; 10-26-2008 at 06:03 PM. |

Does the 3GB limit apply to winXP and/or Windows Home Server?

WHS is just 2k3 with some additional apps built in, so the rules would be the same (and I'm guessing same for XP as well).

Windows 2k, 2003 and thus WHS have the ability to tune the memory allocation between the OS and application (rather than 50/50). This may have a positive result. See the MS link for details on how to use.

Does this issue (not working with > 3GB of ram) occur onluy with the PVR-500 or also with the HVR-1800?
I'm using Windows Home Server and PVR-500 and currently have pulled 2GB of ram out to leave a total of 2GB that indeed made it all work. I wonder if going with the HVR-1800 will give me HD and resolve the memory issue at the same time. Not that the server really needs the 4GB, it's doing fine with the 2GB, but now i just have 2GB laying around....also it's running on a single memory channel whereas putting the 2nd stick of 2GB woudl allow dual channels and thus supposedly increased performance. |

SAGE and Hauppauge conflicts
One of the problems I run into with Hauppauge is driver conflict.
I have 2 PVR 150 and HDPVR and it is a real challange to get them to play together. The other problem between SAGE and Hauppauge HDPVR is the IR Blaster just stops controlling the STB . The only fix is running hcclear then reinstalling the drivers. For what its worth I love sage Ed |

the 1800 works great with over 4 gigs ram installed. But I would just get a x64 O.S and install it, to take full advantage of all the memory install.

I guess my questions was specific to a HVR-1600 or HVR-1800 and a 32bit Win2k3 server ( or actually Windows Home Server which is the same thing) with 4GB installed. Can i expect the HVR1600 or HVR01800 to work...i can remove the PVR-500 if needed
