Shared or separated recorded TV playback?

I've read a lot about the HD Media Extender, but there's something very basic that I don't understand... if I have a couple media extenders, and maybe also watch TV directly at the server PC... do all of them share the same recorded content, or can they be separate?

For example, if my roommate and I have each have our own media extenders connected to the same SageTV server, will we see each other's recorded TV listings, recording schedule, favorites, etc., or will we each have our own separate set of recorded content and recording schedules?

dave.

Everything is shared. SageTV does not have a multi-user system, which I believe is unfortunate.

Same. There is no concept of "users" in Sage. You're both accessing the same server, which is the place where everything happens. You and your roommate would need to agree how to avoid deleting each others recordings, not create recording conflicts, etc.

Ok. Can two copies of SageTV be running on one PC (each with its own tuner and connected to its own Extender)? I'm guessing probably not.

What about the SageTV Client software? Does a PC running the Client software have its own recorded shows and schedule? I seem to remember it stored the recordings on the local PC that the Client is running on, but I could be wrong about that.

Not that I'm aware. You can run two copies on different machines but they'd be fighting over the tuners on single machine.

The SageTV Client runs just the same way. There is no concept of users. What is on the server is viewable the same on any client, placeshifter or media extender.

That's too bad. How about parental controls, can you lock certain extenders out of some of the recordings?

Nope, parental control is global. Although I've never personally used it because I don't have kids.

Just today I made a suggestion to SageTV support to seriously consider multi-user capability and how it could improve parental control and only allow viewing only during certain times for certain users, etc.

If you want your voice to be heard do the same. They don't frequent the forums that much if at all. The forums are strictly for user to user support.
