I would agree with this statement. I think Vista is the better solution now due to longer support and more features. But certainly turn of the UAC to prevent any annoying Vista issues.

Vista. I will never go back to XP when it comes to a SageTV server. EVR support with acceleration, less memory leaks and better power management without the need for tweaks.

I personally have XP on my server and Vista on my client. I was planning on eventually running Vista on my server but with all the tweaks that need to be done for it to run properly I'm just going to stick with XP for the foreseeable future. SageTV Client runs great on my Vista x64 machine though. Particularly since I upgraded to the 6.5.1 beta and have EVR accelerating the video. Less than 10% CPU usage for playback of full 1080p video. This used to require 30-40% CPU.

At a minimum you'd probably want Business or Home Premium. Vista Home Basic doesn't have the 3D accelerated Aero interface. Only go with Ultimate if you're actually going to need the added features.

And even then they're probably not worth it. If you're buying a license now go with the minimum Taddeusz suggests. Save the money on an Ultimate license for Windows 7 in about a year.

I like Vista Business or Ultimate because those versions have RDP (remote desktop). I've used it enough to never buy a OS without it now. You never know when you'll need to remote into your system to fix something while you are away from the actual machine.

Heck, I even use it to do things on my server because I am too lazy to walk downstairs and have to stand in front of it while I work. With RDP, I can use the laptop in front of the TV

once again, vista vs...

My current HTPC was downgraded from XP to 2K because I didn't like the networking on XP. It has workded fine for years (SD only). Now I am going to upgrade to HD (40" 1080p 120hz, LCD 4550 vid card, 4 GB ram 3TB storage - leaning toward an AMD dual-core 3Ghz). I have Vista on my wife's laptop and can't stand it. Every time I open a program it takes 10 minutes. But it seems like it has received pretty good reviews here. I am almost tempted to wait for 7. Any recommendations?

thanks a lot.

In my opinion I think Vista is going the same route as Windows ME a dud.... I would not waste my money on Vista right now rather wait for Windows 7.

I agree in theory but practically speaking I can't wait for it. I am doing the upgrade with the next couple of months so it's either xp or vista (neither of which I have any more licenses for so I am going to have to buy something)

XP or Vista?

I've been running my server on XP for the 2 years since I've had it, but it's time to make a hardware upgrade, and I'm wondering if I should make the move to Vista. (I have copies of both XP MCE 2005 and Vista Home Premium, so price is not a factor).

I always remember hearing before that Vista wasn't worth the extra headaches, whatever those were, but I'm wondering if this is still the case.

Basically, which should I go with, and what advantages and disadvantages are there to each as of now?

Thanks!
