EPG Questions

I was looking into buying some software to build a PVR with my computer.

But i have a couple of questions

Does sagetv get it's listings for the EPG off the internet or does it rely on your cable provider?

Can i record shows directly from the EPG?

I have also heard that when cable companies and the OTA signal goes completely digital next year we will lose the EPG, is there any truth to this?

Where are you located? SageTV has built-in EPG data for the US and Canada. Other places need another source of EPG data, like and XMLTV source.

There is a Program Guide screen that shows the listings & you could choose what to record from there, if you wish. There are also other ways to choose recoridngs, such as Favorites, which will record your favorite shows whenever they are on.

That has no bearing on EPG data, except that it often adds another possible source of data -- many digital stations broadcast EPG data as part of the stream, so that can be used if other listings are not available.

It connects to the SageTV EPG server to download the data, over the port listed in this FAQ about firewall ports.
