Has anyone seen this error before? All my recordings yerturday do not play on either the extender or server. Here is the error when I try to copy the file from one drive to the next ...

"Cannot copy: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)"

Time for a new hard drive. One of 'em is gone. You might be able to recover something (search here for techniques), but that's a sign of HD failure.

Sorry.

Now that I think about it, though, it usually is from a damaged CD or DVD disc, not a hard drive. I can't think of what else it could be, though.

Can't take that chance it is not the drive. I removed it from the recording directory in Sage. Been recording to other drives without problems for about an hour.

And this was my "newest" drive. Back to the older but more stable ones.

Well, it you were copying from one HD to another HD, then it almost certainly is that.

I was just thinking outloud that it's usually seen with a physical (removable) disc, not a HD.

It common for hard drives as well. But I recommend replacing the data cable and trying the HHD in another PC just to rule out motherboard issue as well.
I've run into a bad IDE cable that used to cause this and replacing it stopped the error.

If it still gives the error then it's time for an RMA...

It basically is saying the data read off the source drive does not pass a mathematical data integrity check. In other words, it is reading something off the drive (as opposed to not being able to read anything at all) but it also can determine what it read can't be correct.

One explanation of CRC's can be found on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_redundancy_check

Your new drive is probably bad. You may be able to do a full format (not a quick format) then do a full surface scan and see if it still reports errors. But if it were me, I'd RMA the drive and just get it replaced.

I would definitely do a scan for errors on that drive. It is common to get a couple bad sectors on the drive. The error checker will attempt to move data out of that sector, then mark it as bad. Once marked as bad the OS will never write to that sector again. The space lost is very minute, not worth worrying about.

On the other hand, many bad sectors are usually a precursor to the drive going completely bad. If you get many bad sectors, get rid of the drive. If you get say 10 or so, repair them and use the drive. If you use the drive, I would do a weekly error scan just to make sure you are not getting MORE bad sectors.

Anyways, that is what I would do.
