Music media

I have a lot of music on my HTPC. I can't stand the way my music is organized in Sage. Some times when I try to play an album...I'll select "view album" and only one song will be displayed. It is really annoying. Anyone else have this issue?

Are your songs tagged with the Album Artist info? If not, you can end up with too many or not enough songs for some albums.

You can check this in Windows Media Player by right clicking on a song, choose Advanced Tag Editor, go to the Artist Info tab, and look at the Album Artist field.

Or... if you've filtered the music list by viewing items, you could end up with a partial album listed because as you filter items, it displays only those songs left in the list. i.e.: choose to view the Band artist group & it will then filter down to show only songs by the Band. But, there may be some multi-artist collection album which only has 1 or 2 songs from the Band.

You might want to check out this guide by Brent Evans about MP3tag.

BTW: An older post had a comment that you have to use the 'BAND' tag in MP3tag to set the Album Artist.

I have a similar situation and have found that the easiest method (for me, at least) is to just use a familiar MP3 program (I use WinAmp) and create playlists - even if they are just an album itself - saved in playlist format .M3U, and then "refresh imported media", and Sage will find these. Then you can just navigate music playback from the "playlists" view.

It's not the greatest and I am still hoping for a future mod to make the music interface more friendly, but it works for me now.

I have a bunch of CDs I would like to move to my HTPC as well. It looks like I have to use MP3, so I was wondering what tools you guys use to rip these discs? I was hoping for a free solution (or I would probably go with JRMC) which supports high bitrates.

Not everyone uses mp3. I do rip to mp3 & just use Windows Media Player to rip the CDs, mp3 tag tools for some touch-ups, if needed. I also have a program called Album Art Fixer that someone posted a link to a while back.

There's an Album Art Fixer link from Google, but I the screen shots & so on are missing & I don't know what's going on with the program.

I like how WMP works, but it doesn't seem to support very high bitrates, unless I am missing something. I am even considering lossless at this point, but that would mean .WAV format, and no Album meta data, unless someone got .ogg/.ape to work with SageTV.

I have all my music stored in FLAC format (lossless) and Sage handles that format fine

+1 for flac, EAC to create FLAC. Mp3tag to massage the tags.

I would just be happy if Sage could play a "folder." For example, when you toggle to "view by folder," I would likt to be able to play an entire folder (bc I have my music organized into folders), but instead it will only let me play 1 track at a time, and I would have to individually Queue the other tracks, very annoying and inconvenient.

+1 for FLAC. I use JRiver to rip my CDs.
The only problem I've run into is the HD extender has known bugs playing back flac recordings. It locks up when using FF and RW within a song.

How are you trying to do that and what happens when you try it?

I'm asking because SageTV can play an entire folder -- all of the songs in the selected folder plus all of the songs in that folder's subfolders. I do that every so often, so I know it works.

I usually browse by folder. Then when I am in the folder I can select individual tracks but I don't see an option to play the whole folder.

Select the folder itself before browsing into it, or just use the Play command while the folder is highlighted. Once you are in a folder, your selection choices are limited to the individual files in that folder or its individual subfolders.

And, you are talking about the default STV, right?

I had no idea EAC could do flac, this would be a nice solution.

I use Tag&Rename to work over the tags and album art.

VERY INTERESTING!

Here is some instructions on how to set it up.
