Help! Media MVP and SageTV6.3 problems

Could someone please help me. I've downloaded and installed the trial version of SageTV 6.3 on a server with two nic’s, one of which connects to ADSL modem/router and the other directly to MVP via crossover cable. Static IP doesn't work at all, it seems there is no communication with MVP. I’ve installed Turbo-DHCP on my server and I can ping MVP but instead of SageTV UI I’m just getting some lines on the TV screen. What am I missing?

BTW. Hauppauge software works without problems, I have now stoped it and disabled it’s services so that it doesn’t interfere with SageTV.

Has anyone got SageTV6.3 working with wired Media MVP? Doesn't work for me.

Try submitting a support request to SageTV.

You cannot hook up the MVP with a crossover cable, unless you are running a DHCP server on your computer. The MVP only runs on DHCP. Try hooking it up to your router, which should be able to assign a DHCP address, unless you have DHCP turned off on your router. Make sure that the ports needed for SageTV are open in your router. If you have a software firewall, disable the software firewall when first settting up SageTV to rule out problems with the software firewall. The software firewall can be turned on later.

I've already submitted a support request, but all I got so far was a suggestion to open ports on the firewall. I'm not running a firewall so that is no use to me.

I installed something called DHCP turbo on my SageTV server, that allocates IP to MVP, I can ping it but SageTV UI is not displayed. I disabled DHCP on my router and am using fixed IP addresses. I guess I could setup another router just for DHCP but I would like to avoid it if possible.

Can you not just enable DHCP on your current router and ensure it's in the same subnet as your fixed IP's but make your available range outside of the IP's currently in use ? This is how I have my network setup with Server and Main Workstation on fixed IP's, MVP's, Kids Workstation, Laptop and VOIP adaptor get DHCP.

Hope the above makes sense !

FWIW, me too.

I have 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.10 as static addresses.

192.168.1.100 - .110 are DHCP-assigned dynamic.

Works fine.

Thank you. I've got it working now; connected to router and as was suggested used dhcp outside of the static range. It's a shame it doesn't work with static ip though. Thanks again for your help.

If you are only using DHCP for your MVP unit(s), then I would suggest that you make the DHCP address range small enough to just fit all the MVP unit(s) in the range. If your router is like mine, then you have to open the firewall for specific addresses instead of the subnet. When the MVP addresses move around within the DHCP range, then they might move out of the addresses that were opened up. If the DHCP range was small, then the IPs would stay in the range.

Some routers do have the ability to assign a DHCP address to a MAC address, which would keep the MVP address fixed. I thought about putting DHCP software on my SageTV server for the MVP units, but after hearing about your problems using DHCP software on the SageTV server, perhaps I won't try out that idea.

I have never used Turbo-DHCP but tftpd32 works fine for me and you can have it provide static addresses to the MVPs.

Really though they don't need a static address as everything about them is tracked by their MAC address.
