CPU Fan problem - suggestions welcome

I had this motherboard, CPU, Memory, PowerSupply and CPU HeatSink installed and working. Then I foolishly wanted to complete the build by installing a floppy (I know who uses them anymore but I had one from an old build and I need it for the drivers for the motherboard on a Windows install).

Anyway I managed to get the power for the floppy plugged in one pin off and caused a short. I shut it off as soon as I saw the smoke less then a minute I think. After removing the melted floppy power cable I powered up the system again and it appeared to work but I didn't want to take a chance so I ordered a new power supply (exact replacement). Plus the warning tones saying the CPU fan wasn't spinning were going off.

I connected the new power supply and powered up. After a while the warning tones started up. Checked and the fan is spinning fine even though the speed in the motherboard utility software still showed 0 rpm.

So thinking it might be the motherboard itself I replaced it with an exact replacement. Took longer for the CPU fan warning to come back but it did.

So I replaced the CPU HeatSink next with a different model but fits my case better. But still getting the CPU fan warning.

So my question is should I replace the CPU and memory too - it's the only thing left to try but I've already waisted enough money potentially and would like opinions before I scrape the funds together to buy another CPU and memory.

Your mobo is complaining because it can't sense the fan speed, and therefore can't throttle the fan. Disable the automatic fan control to give the fan full voltage. If it's too loud, install a manual fan controller.

Gremlins maybe? I mean you replaced the mobo, the cpu fan, and the PS. In a sane world that should have been more than enough to fix the problem.

It is disabled but I switched it to 4 pin workstation mode and then back to disabled again. I'll see how long it lasts. Thanks.

That's what I was wondering. I had this Motherboard working for months with a different CPU (same model Q6600 though) and memory. I wanted to switch to the built in video to maximize the slots and I got a new PCI-E raid card so didn't need the PCI-X slots any more so I switched to the other board. I just wanted confirmation that I wasn't crazy and that if the CPU worked it wouldn't be causing the dropped signal from the CPU fan sensor it just might be a defect/incompatibility between the motherboard and something else. Think I'm going to try an Intel board next unless anyone has further suggestions. I would get an ASUS but I haven't had good luck with their Intel boards. I've had two P4C800 Deluxe boards that have crapped out on me. The P4C800 Deluxe had a bad AGP slot and the P4C800E Deluxe locks up and has to be rebooted after a time (days, weeks or months).

Well after replacing nearly every component. MB, CPU, HeatSink, PSU I found the solution - replace the case fans . Oh well now I have another quad core system to work with . This taught me something too. I should have listened to my eye doctor and gotten bifocals - next appointment.
