Transcoded HD .AVI file doesn't play video on PC

I transcoded all my HD recordings to the HD Good Quality AVI format.

Now, I can play the transcoded videos on my HDME, but my PC only plays the audio without video.

This appears to be the case for every transcoded file.

Is this a known problem?

You probably don't have an MPEG4 decoder installed on your PC. 'ffdshow' is a freely available one that works pretty well.

I'm using the nVidia PureVideo decoder. Doesn't that support MPEG4? Also, I can see everything just fine using VLC ...

(PureVideo with my 8800 GTS SLI is amazing! Averages 6 - 12% CPU on HD content!).

The Purevideo decoder is Mpeg2 only, AFAIK.

Aloha,
Mike

As Mike said nVidia Purevideo is mpeg2 only. VLC has it's own built in decoders that only it can use. You need to get your self something like Cyberlink PowerDVD or another decoder that supports mpg4.

Thanks ... I installed ffdshow and set the Xvid format to use the "libavcodec", and now I get video again.

BTW, should the Xvid format codec be set to "Xvid"? libavcodec has a lower CPU load on my PC.

You're good using libavcodec. Its just a library of a/v decoders/encoders including xvid.
