I doesn't seem that long ago that I was using a PDP11 with two 8" floppy drives (no hard drive) running CP/M.

However, I have to say WHS is the best I've used so far. I had an automatic reboot scheduled once a week to keep XP stable. I've only been running WHS for nearly 2 months, but so far so good.

Of course it is just as likely to be the hardware that is more stable. I upgraded from an Athlon64 3200+ to an Intel Q6600. Judging by the horsepower that appears will be necessary to detect commercials in h.264 files, I'm very glad I went with the quad core.

Aloha,
Mike

I'm the second Vista Business voter But Stanger is right, if you can't set up a stable box in the first place, the OS doesn't matter.

finally found the problem, I think. Looks like the CPU fan was dusty and air circulation was poor in the case. Blew everything out and decided to leave the side open. Now I'm in the low 50's C and no reboots in quite a while.

Those XP 3200's run hot to begin with (if I am not mistaken they were the last XP made before the switch to the Athlon64's). It's amazing how sometimes its the little things that cause us so much grief!

interesting to hear. I just build 2 AMD 4000+ dual-cores for someone else and both are in the low 30s idle @ 1800 rpm.

I'd also have to vote for OSX. Started with a Mac firewire encoder under Tiger (because the Windows cable box drivers didn't work for me) and, eventually, moved to a Leopard box, running both SageTV server and the firewire encoders. Rock solid.

Would be interesting to see the results of what is the most unstable platform for SageTV.

I may in the minority here, but my server is pushing an SD TV directly as well as recording as a service. I had issues with XP Pro, not on the recording side, but on the playback side. I just upgraded to Vista Business (this weekend) and so far so good. But my experience has been short and I therefore did not respond to the survey.

My server runs my lounge setup, and serves 2 clients. I use XP Home, and haven't had many issues. And those I have had were fixed by upgrading the odd driver after a service pack. Neither of my clients have had an issue in about a year. Both running XP

You forgot the "Any of the above, if you just leave it alone" option.

In my limited experience, WHS is rock solid. Once I got everything working right my WHS PC has been trouble free. Not a single crash, no missed recordings, it just works.
