Actually PowerDVD 8 + TS (mpeg2) + embedded Closed Captions work very well.

TSmuxer is super easy.. just drag n drop. Unselect streams you dont want and save.

As far as backing up my older DVD's goes how well does a transport stream support the graphical subtitles and can those subtitles be played back with SageTV?

Well, I was messing around a little bit converting a couple of my mkv files to ts. I didn't try to play them on my client but they won't play at all on my HD100. I get the spinning circle for a while and it just eventually kicks back out to the menu. Very odd. And it won't recognize m2ts files at all.

Edit: I'm also a little disappointed that even though tsMuxeR supports "tracks" it doesn't seem to be able to use MKV tracks or be able to import them from a file. The only way that it seems you can do this is to enter them manually which is a PITA.

Unhappy Still not seeing PDVD8

OK, here's the scoop:

I am in the process of trying SageTV and so far I love it; it has taken a little while to get things going and I have a few more things to do to get it the way I want, but so far so good.
(By the way, I did get my Hauppauge 1250 up and running Clear QAM digital cable so anyone who needs help on that, please me know and/or I will post in the appropriate thread. )

As far as the PDVD8 goes, I have followed the instructions provided regarding updating the sage.properties file (thanks very much by the wya) with the needed lines to enable use of the PDVD8 codes but they are not showing up in detailed setup as options. By the way, the Cyberlink audio codec DOES show up as an option, just no video ones.

I did have PDVD7 and upgraded to PDVD8; I know that may be an issue but I can find no registry entries or folders/files relating to PDVD7.

So here are my questions:
- I am running the server and I looked for all possible locations for the sage.properties file and have made adjustments as recommended but to no avail. Am I editing the wrong file? Is there is an alternate location I should be looking for?
- Might there be orphaned PDVD7 codecs floating around fouling up the process?
- Is there a way to test the sage.properties file to see if it is the correct one being used? Perhaps a dummy entry that would show up in detailed settings as an option?

I have checked and double checked the lines in the sage.properties file I edited to ensure they match the recommendations in this post as well as the friendly names in the registry and they do.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Regards

PS: Antec Fusion 2, Vista Home Ultimate, 2.4ghz Duo, 2 gig ram, 2x500gb internal drive, internal lite-on blu-ray drive. (I'll update my profile soon with all the details.)

Since you're running Vista you need to edit the sage.properties file in the virtual store directory. Not the one in Program Files. And make sure the Sage service is completely stopped.

Thanks Gerry, I'll look into that and report back! I just purchased SageTV last night and I'm looking forward to maximizing it's capability.

With the newer versions of SageTV I haven't had any problems with it finding the PDVD8 decoders. I think the 6.4 betas have added the PDVD8 decoders their list.

I am using the latest version (not Beta) but I did have PDVD7 installed and then upgraded to 8. I'll check the virtual store directory and see what's up with that.

I really don't need the server running since I'm not using any clients and I most likely will use Orb for internet viewing and scheduling - I'm still working on that. I wish the Sage Service would handle the scheduled recording piece so the application could be completely shut down ala Media Center, not just put to sleep.

That last bit confuses me. I run a headless server using the SageTV service. I don't have the UI running at all. My scheduling runs just fine so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

I'm referring to this entry in the SageTV documentation:

Quote:
Recording Programs
Can SageTV record while my PC is nor on?
For SageTV to record programs your PC must be on and the SageTV application must be running. You can put SageTV to sleep instead of shutting down the application, then SageTV will appear in your Taskbar System Tray SageTV will then be able to perform all recordings and you will be free to use your PC for other operations. See Sleeping SageTV.
Believe me, if I don't have to have the the Sage application running in the system tray, I'd be happier!!

If you're running SageTV as a service it is still running and and not in the tray.

The PDF manual is cross linked -- did you follow the link that says "See Sleeping SageTV"? That section has a link to "How the State of SageTV affects Creating TV Recordings", which tells you that the state of the UI has no effect on creating recordings if the service mode is running, with a link to the info about using service mode.

OK, strike what I wrote above, I'm such a moron; thank you both Andy and Gerry. I will not go slap myself.

I think the thread was locked because it's no longer relevant for the most recent versions of SageTV; as, SageTV finally fixed that problem. But, yes, it does work work like charm.

Oh yeah.. and youre quite welcome

I also tried putting in my sage properties:

videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD8)

and got a black screen when playing a h.264 file. I am running vista, but did not have a SaeTv in the virtualstore (I am the only person using my pc), any advice?

When I put the dvd encoder lines in teh proerties file, the options did appear in the setup menu.
