After my RMA unit arrived I made sure it was working well, then made some modifications (It still felt hot). Mr HD-PVR meet Mr Dremel. I cut a series of ribs on both sides and excised a 3 inch square of the top (right over the Ambarella and Analog Devices chips). Looks real ugly.

Everybody who bought one of these should take a gander at this article, and then follow the link at the bottom to register a comment with the FCC.

Looks like the MPAA is trying to close the analogue hole "temporarily" in exchange for letting premium channels air movies earlier. Not a good precedent...

Thank you for your order for our HD-PVR. As we are sure you are aware, some customers who have received the first allocation of these units have experienced technical issues with the HD-PVR. We are in the process of finalizing the fix for these issues and they will be implemented in the next wave of product shipping to you. We expect to be able to resume shipments by the end of the month.
Thanks for this info. I'm glad they figured out the problem. I was waiting for it and will order one now.

I suspect that Dorothy overheated under the circumstances and was sent back for a replacement!

They are not. I ordered one last friday and received an email that they would not be shipping until early July. I knew they weren't shipping right now, but wanted to "get in line" so that I didn't have to wait until August (or later).

Yes I am expecting my RMA replacement unit to arrive at my house tomorrow. I wasn't thrilled to have to pay for return shipping, and I'd have been even less thrilled if I'd have to wait another month (although I'll be still less thrilled if my replacement unit fails to work flawlessly)

If they make any significant revisions I wonder if they will offer to replace the original ones early adopters have?

I posted this in the "HD-PVR No Workithe" thread, but for those of you not reading it, this is what's going on (straight from Hauppauge tech support rep):

Quote:
Not sure when (or if) an "official" statement will be released but I can
give you the following information regarding the units. According to
engineering some of the Ambarella chips do require a higher voltage. The
higher voltage of course creates more heat. To combat this new and reworked
units will have a heat sink on the Ambarella and a fan in the case that will
turn on when the unit is streaming video to the PC (either in preview or
recording - pass thru will not turn on the fan). This issue does not affect
all units but any unit shipping from here on out will have the mods done.
This has been tested on several units known to lock up (mainly customer
returns) so engineering is confident in this fix. Your next question may be
"why weren't the cases vented?". To which I can only answer "I don't know".

fyi, for the void your warranty crowd, you can epoxy your own heatsink onto the chip.

A RAM chip heatsink would work, or you could get something larger from Mouser.

So even with heatsink and fan, the hot air still gets trapped inside the case? If this is true, When I get my unit, I think I'll drill some holes in the case to get proper ventilation.

I think he meant the original cases...

Although it would be quite funny to see a fan inside a non ventilated case.

I haven't put my ear to it, but the one I got back today, is definately in the same case, with no ventilation. If they put a fan on the inside, it was apparently enough to get the job done, cause I have no issues now.

I checked mine (came back today also).... yes, there is a small heatsink on the Ambrella chip. And yes, there is a fan. And no, there is no case ventilation. A little strange... but I think the reason they put the fan in there was to circulate the inside air through the heatsink. The air can still transfer heat to the outside through the plastic case... it's just not quite as efficient as bring in new air from outside. In any event, all seems to be working well so far.

I'm not going to RMA my other unit.. I'm gonna run down to the electronics store and get a heatsink to put on there myself just for good measure.

My RMA return unit also seems to be working well. The fan makes a slightly annoying hum but I can live with it.
