So far I am having the same problem Yopper described. After downloading and installing SP1, Stage 1 and 2 completed successfully, but somewhere in Stage 3 it attempted a reboot, then received the BSOD. Rebooting in normal mode just resulted in the BSOD. Had to Reboot in Safe Mode, then Stage 3 continued on...it is currently at 94%. I started this upgrade at 4pm...it is now nearly 10pm (6hours!) and still no dice. What a piece of sh*t! Obviously MS has a few bugs to work out at our expense...

I installed Vista SP1 yesterday and one thing I noticed was that it restored the ehtray.exe file. I am using LM Remote Keymap with my mce remote.
I noticed that my remote seemed sluggish and then when I pressed the green button vista media center popped up on top of SageTV.

I had to disable ehtray.exe in order to get my remote working again.
I couldn't remember how I had done this the first time so I had to go searching.
I found a simple way to do this using takeown here

open an administrator command window:

takeown /f c:\windows\ehome\ehtray.exe

Then Right click ehtray.exe go to properties, security, advanced and give yourself full control of this file. Then, I renamed it to ehtray.exe.bak and after a reboot my custom buttons worked again.

I called Microsoft and they told me what to do. It is a real Rube Goldberg of stuff.

1. Search for "temp" and delete all files.
2. Search for "prefetch" and delete all files.
3. Search for "%temp%" and delete all files

They told me that this should be done regularly to improve Windows performance.

4. Go to Internet Properties and set security level to "default" Clear browser history.
5. Go to "Advanced" in internet properties and uncheck "Enable 3rd party extensions"
6. Go to msconfig and select service. Check at bottom "hide MS services". Disable all services that remain.
7. Go to startup tab and disable all services.
8. Reboot
9. Disable any antivirus.

Try to install SP1.

After SP1 is installed, go back to msconfig and reenable all services and startup.

Reboot.

I have not tried this yet - I will attempt to do this later this morning.

News at 11.....

Success!

I followed the procedure above and everything worked!

The infamous stage 3 install took only ten minutes this time.

All this effort - and everything looks the same as before!

Wow, Yooper and alan,
I'm sorry to hear that your SP1 installs were so problematic. As Rube Golbergish as those instructions sound, I guess it makes sense why my SP1 install went so well on a clean build. Of course, I'm still installing, tweaking, and configuring programs; the downside, I guess, of wiping your OS. It's all fun for me though.

Still haven't quite gotten to regular usage on my client, so the proverbial jury is still out for me on SP1, but so far so good

Yeah, the "WOW" definitely stops right after install. But hopefully the "under the hood" enhancements will make it worth the trouble. For me at least, transfer speeds have improved greatly and that was #1 on my list.

I wonder if Microsoft secretly pulled SP1? When I now run Windows update on my other machines SP1 does not show up.

It might be that those computers have drivers that are being flagged as "dangerous."

This issue is discussed here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5

One of the causes is indeed having an incompatible driver. In my case it is the Realtek sound driver.

I need to look for an updated driver!

I've installed it on 4 boxes so far, including the HTPC...no problems other than having to do it a 2nd time on the tablet before it stuck. Supposedly,

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\NetworkThrottlingIndex

is still stuck at 10, and needs to be set at around 70 for network speeds to pick up. I *have* noticed that a network encoder is performing better...I thought I had an OTA signal strength problem, but everytime I checked, it was at 95-100% (The programs were pixelated and dropping audio/video). After SP1 and the above tweak, all the shows recorded so far are fine.

To avoid the stuck at stage 3 of 3 issue when installing SP1, take a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

Basically, scroll all the way down on that page and install those updates first, then run the SP1 update.

Add another 4-5 happily updated Vista machines to the list - I've installed it on my very old laptop (well, almost 4 year old laptop), my workstation, Sage client, and on several computers for a friend and no glitches at all. Performance increase is there, though nothing spectacular. However, it did solve a lot of suspend/resume issues with my workstation.

Where's the FAQ for Vista SP1 Install

Where's a link or FAQ on how to get Vista SP1 and SageTV to play nice together? I installed SP1 and decided it was time to try SageTV again. It worked. Media Extender worked.

Got a message on reboot that MS media center was crashed and MS would advise me of a fix when available. But, for the most part SP1 allowed SageTV to work. A little stutter now and then, but the remote control issue appears to be gone.

Today I turned on my computer and SageTV acted like I'd never gone through the setup before. What gives?

Before asking: UAC is turned off. I did go through the setup, including adding my registration codes to SageTV and extender. Firewall is configured. Version 6.3

Just ran through the initialization again, and some of my settings were still there, but not all. What's the deal?

Also, why is the time incorrect? It's 4 hours later than the real time, and my correct zipcode is in the setup (for SageTV).

Looks like the properties file was corrupted which rarely occurs.

Is your Java up to date? Go to http://www.java.com/en/ and click on do I have Jave.

Why would Java be out of date. It installed from the SageTV setup package.

Because they do not always stay current. It should be current enough but check at the Java site.

I checked. You're right, it was outdated. But SageTV shouldn't send out software that isn't up to date. Or, it should automatically check for an update. Either way, I doubt that will fix the problem.

Most time related issues are because of Jave issues.

You probably should also remove older versions of Java.

Windows Media Center Receiver Service stopped working and was closed.

So, nope, java didn't fix that. But, you have to start some where. As I recall, back in the early days of Vista, which seems like only a year ago (wait, it was a year ago that they actually released it - not counting betas and before), they said to disable media center. Hmm, that still needs to be done? I don't need to disable Internet Explorer to run Firefox or Opera or any other browser.

Again, where's the FAQ?

Yes, the time issue did go away. So, I thank you regarding that.

I'm sorry if I'm being a little negative. It's just that I've been waiting for this to work for over a year, and have not seen anything in an official way from SageTV regarding this. I know everyone else loves their customer support, but I am very disappointed. If I hadn't already bought the software, I'd've given up on it a long time ago.

I'm running my server on Vista, and aside from some driver issues with specific cards, no problems with Sage. I'm also not using the Vista machine as a client, only a server, hosting 2 HD Extenders, a couple MVP's and a couple clients. I don't have anything disabled in my Vista setup, and have never seen the remote service die on me (even on a Vista client I run sometimes, with the Microsoft beanbag & remote).

If you've got MS Media Center crashing on boot, you have some other problems to look into, I've NEVER seen that on any of my Vista machines (I've got quite a few, Home Premiums & Ultimates, and a couple Business).
