Using a DVI-HDMI cable

Hello,

I recently upgraded my Sage computer to for HDTV support. Currently, SageTV is working great and I can playback and record HDTV smoothly.

I have been using the VGA (analog) input on my TV and displaying at 1024x768 at 60hz -- the display looks good, but I want to view 1080i ATSC station in true HD, so I bought a DVI-HDMI cable. When I use the cable to connect the DVI port to the TV, the TV reports 'no signal'. My system details are as follows:

OS: WinXP home
Graphics: GeForce 6200 (w/ Nvidia Purevideo decoder)
Resolution: 1280x720 at 60hz (this should be 720p, right? -- I tried various other resolutions and nothing worked...)

SageTV is version 6.5.3 with 2 ATI 650PRO capture cards -- although I don't think this is a SageTV related problem.

Is anyone out there using a DVI-HDMI cable, and if so, how did you get it to work?

Thanks,

--
Joe

Joe,
I'm using a HDMI to DVI cable on my HD100 (HD Extender) with SageTV since I have an older LCD TV with only DVI inputs. It just worked. I didn't have any problems with it so I'm wondering if its a problem with your cable or your TV?

As strange as it sounds, not all DVI ports can accept a digital signal. I had a Sharp LCD TV with a DVI port, but using a hdmi-DVI cable gave no signal, even using a DVI-DVI cable gave no signal. I had to use a VGA-DVI lead, which kind of defied the point of even having a DVI port on the TV.
Perhaps this is the problem with your TV.

Clarification

Ahh, I think I should have been more clear.

My Video Card (GeForce 6200) has a DVI out, which I attach to the HDMI input of my TV... yet 'no signal' is detected even at 1280x720@60hz.

It sounds like people were interpreting my original post as having a DVI in on the TV (which isn't the case).

Regards,

Before going with an HD extender I had a Geforce 7200(?) card with a DVI output that I connected to my (Sony) TV's HDMI input. I used a little adapter plug that had DVI on one side and hdmi on the other and then used an hdmi-hdmi cable to the TV. It worked fine.
That said, I did download the latest drivers from Nvidia which even included overscan adjustment support before trying HDMI. (I had originally used VGA like you.)

So, you may want to try grabbing the latest drivers and see what kind of trouble you can get yourself into. Otherwise, I would just buy an HD100 once they become available again and never worry about video cards and decoders again.

Ahhh, well in that case, I have also heard that not all HDMI ports are compatible with DVI. A friend of mine had one hdmi port labeled up as "dvi/hdmi", and one marked up as "hdmi"; and sure enough, the one marked only as "hdmi" wouldn't accept a signal from a DVI equipped gfx card.
This was on a really budget model TV though.

Check your card's properties. There may be some option on there to enable HD output that will trigger the display.

Can you remote into the PC, while it's hooked up to the LCD?

They're the same thing, HDMI is just a superset of DVI (supporting audio mainly).

Joe, was the TV on before you powered on the PC, it's possible the PC disabled the DVI output because it didn't detect a display connected to the DVI port.
