hdhomerun or hvr-1600?

hi-

i'm finalizing my setup (new user) and am trying to understand how best to record both sd and hd. in that vein, is there much of a difference between the following two:

1. one hdhomerun + one pvr-500
2. two of the hvr-1600 units

is there a reason to prefer one to the other (in terms of ease of use, quality, etc)?

thanks!

If you have the PCI slots available, it's hard to beat the HVR-1600 for the price. Though, I hear that setting up to receive QAM is much easier on the HDHR.

I have 4 of the HVR-1600s and am very pleased.

I had 2 HVR1600s that I RMA'd recently due to their pitiful QAM performance. My HDHomeRun detects 12 channels while the 1600s only got 4 and all of those were so pixelated they were unwatchable.

Someone just posted on these forums about new drivers for the 1600 that they claim fixes some of these problems. You might want to follow that and see if the QAM performance has improved or not before making up your mind.

I'm getting ready to rebuild my sagetv setup and want to include a HD tuner card. Things have gone a long way the past 2 years since I first setup my Sagetv. Looks like I'm going to be reading more up on 1600 and HDHR since both sound like good solutions.

I have the 1800 (like the 1600 but PCIe) - no issues with it... good card. Found all of the local stations (OTA antenna), and SVideo quality appears good.

The reason I opted for cards in the PC was to minimize network traffic. Recording 2 HD channels and playing multiple channels sounded like a lot of traffic to me... and I didn't want to bother with multiple nics in the server so I opted for cards. May or may not be something for you to consider.

I have the 1600, and could not get QAM to work with it at all, even with the new drivers. I just bought an HDHomeRun and love it. I use my 1600 now just for SD, and it's okay. The quality on SD broadcasts over cable isn't great for me.
