I uninstalled 6.3.9 and reinstalled 6.3.8 on my client/network encoder (keeping all the properties files & Wiz.bin's from the 6.3.9 install) and things seem more stable for me. So far I've left the server at 6.3.9. I have a strict SageTVClient at 6.3.8 and it behaves fine talking to the 6.3.9 server too.

Edit: one thing that does appear to be broken by going back to 6.3.8 is DVD playing. If we play a DVD, then stop that and watch a recording, then try to play a DVD again, the DVD locks up SageTV.

I took a suggestion from Carlgar and changed the audio decoder to AC3filter... and since doing that I have not had a lockup or spinning wheel.
I now have Sagetv.exe close on me with the windows reporting box .. ie "Sage has encountered a problem, do you wish to tell Microsoft". It does not happen as often as the lockups. I caught this last bit of info from debugs this morning.

Mon 2/25 7:11:03.368 Error with c/s comm:java.lang.NullPointerException
Mon 2/25 7:11:03.369 NetworkManager CommunicationFailure : /127.0.0.1:3838 type=2
Mon 2/25 7:11:03.369 NetworkManager CommunicationFailure : /127.0.0.1:3838 type=2
Mon 2/25 7:11:07.648 Error communicating with server:java.lang.NullPointerException
Mon 2/25 7:11:07.648 Cleaning up c/s connection
Mon 2/25 7:11:07.648 NetworkManager CommunicationFailure : /127.0.0.1:3838 type=1
Mon 2/25 7:11:07.648 MsgSend thread terminating for /127.0.0.1:3838

Not sure if this helps ??
I have 3 MVPs playing slide shows, I will be shutting them off and only work through PC to see if there is any change

When I encounter those type of errors, I always report them to Microsoft. You should also report it to sage support and let them know that you have a log. Be sure to save the log for them. You should also let them know that you have to use AC3filter to get around the other issue.

unfortunately, that's not it for me. I've been running AC3Filter for over a year.

I upgraded to .10 and the problem seems to be worse. I've been trying to feed as much info as I can to support. I don't know whats happening on their end.

I am still having sage.exe close on me with the windows error message, the service always stays running. It only happens when clicking around on videos or menus. Again if I just let a show play there are no issues.
What has Sage done with the new software as far as the video presentation goes ( if that is what it is). It happens on my machine that runs the service and it happens on another machine that runs the client, different video cards, therefore different drivers, ect... so something changed in Sage.

I guess I should open a trouble case as well.

I haven't got back to my extensive testing, however I did load the AMD drivers that were posted on the forum and I haven't seen the issue recently. However I will need to do more testing to be sure.

I guess the question at the moment is what Processor folks are using. Is it AMD? If it is this may be the root cause.

EDIT: I got yet another lock up tonight (2 to be exact). One while trying to play a file and another while FF thru a commerical.

Update:
I have turned off 3d acceleration and now do not get the lockups.... Maybe it is my video card.
I will continue to test and post results...

Hmm interesting, my 3D Acceleration has been off the entire time. If you are seeing this issue and haven't submitted it to sage support please do. They will want as much info as we can give them about this.

Thinking this issue was related to the USB-UIRT I tried fast forwarding and rewinding with a mouse...same issue. UI locked, got the pinwheel had to reboot.

I had this problem too. Looking around the forum, I tried boosting my JVM heap based on this thread:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...15&postcount=2

That seemed to solve the problem but as I found 6.3.10 to be unstable, I also dropped back to 6.3.6

Yup, read my post there - I think SageMC is causing the instability somewhere, I upped my JVM size and switched back to the default STV after too many issues while using SageMC.

I've tried the JVM size fix but that doesn't seem to have changed anything. Basically the UI hangs in a dead loop. I have to reboot or I have to kill the sagetv process/app.

I have hanging/freezing problems with the later releases of Sage as well. 6.38 seems a little better - but not perfect. I too think the problem is worse with SageMC and have a bit more stability (though less fun) with the original stv.

I've been reluctant to mention it since I attributed it the the HD/r5000 somehow.

Ive been using Sage for over 4 years now, and havent had so many problems. When the same problems listed above started happening to me, I did some searching on the forums but never looked in the Beta area because Im not using a Beta version. (6.3.10)

I have wasted so many hours ( and a good part of my week long vacation) trying to troubleshoot this. I have replaced every component on my client (mobo, video, sound, power supply, hard drive) reinstalled xp 2 times, different version of java, replaced the hard drive on my server
Ive tried alot of codecs (Purevideo, ati, cyberlink , sage), sound settings, overlay, vmr7, vmr9, everything I can think of, and nothing always works!!
I say always because sometimes it will work for hours with no problems, then it will start crashing again. Sometimes I get the spinning circle and cant close out so I gotta reboot, sometimes the computer will just reboot, sometimes the computer will start making a bunch of skipping like noises then freeze, sometimes I get a java exception error.

The only thing I know for sure is that it seems to happen with certain recordings, but the source seems irrelavant (using 2 150's, and avermedia for atsc). I can play these same files from either MPC or Powerdvd on the client no problem. I can also play them on the server without problems.

So, where do we find the answers?! Has sage found the problem for any of you. I am just sick of wasting my time (and money) with this.

My MediaMVP seems to work fine, my issue occurs when I play a file on the "server" (watching locally). I've gone back and forth with support numerous times. They have requested screen shots of the console window after the hang. While I'm willing to do what I can to get the issue fixed (wife isn't happy) I just don't have time to deal with this stuff either. To that end they requested screen shots a week or so ago and I have yet to do it.

In short...no answers on why this is happening or a fix.

Thanks for the quick reply, makes me wonder how many people are using the later versions. If alot of the seasoned veterans are like me, they dont upgrade unless they need to.

After doing more searching, looks like many others are having similar problems (some with sagemc and others not). Wouldnt be surprised if its Java. We have quite a few apps at my work that use Java, and it can be a real PITA. I remember taking a java programming class in '94 and they claimed it would be endall of languages!(OS independent, always backward compatible, blah, blah). Well its not backward compatible. We usually have to be very careful about what version(s) of JRE our users have depending on what apps they need access to, and its still a crapshoot. I doubt sage will ever change, but I think keeping it Java based is a bad idea.
